im gunna try the plugging into a router thing in the next hour gunna put a password on first. i have typed in http://192.168.2.1 into my internetexplorer,
now just looking for the correct place
using google to help me know where it is0 -
didint work it just logged me out the whole system and was asking for a key that i didnt have...
sorted it all out now however its still unsafe without a password. think we'l get someone to come in and sort out the setting up the security,
after that whats there to do you have all said the internet package we are with is fine so if we dont need to change it what do we need to do apart from the security (i really dont think many people would be accessing our network to be honest as we live in a old posh sort of area and none of the people hear even have a pc0 -

You are meant to provide the key - i.e. make a password and then save it. Then when you connect via the laptop you use that key.sorted it all out now however its still unsafe without a password. think we'l get someone to come in and sort out the setting up the security,
That might be a good idea as you don't know what you are doing.after that whats there to do you have all said the internet package we are with is fine so if we dont need to change it what do we need to do apart from the security (i really dont think many people would be accessing our network to be honest as we live in a old posh sort of area and none of the people hear even have a pc
You have to check why you are getting 0.34Mb on a 10Mb connection. This is my speedtest with a 10Mb connection.
Virgin support will help - their newsgroups are much better than their telephone support.
The first thing they are going to ask you to do is to run a test when you are directly connected to the cable modem just in case you have a router problem.
Remove your ethernet cable that goes from the cable modem to the router and plug it directly into the laptop/PC. Switch everything off - then start the cable modem then the PC/laptop. Run another test and post it her.0 -
i did it said you type as password in and it would generate some sort of key that will be used as your password (yeh i thought that seemed weird too)
any ideas what that was about?
the main computer is directly connected to the belkin internet box so ill run a speed check on that one
thankyou for your helpful post0 -
You select the encryption method (use WPA) in the wireless security settings of your router, using the web interface. Enter your chosen encryption code. Save these settings and it will reboot. Your network is then secure.
To connect wirelessly you then select your network using your laptop's wireless connection, it will then request you to enter the encryption code. Once you've done tha once it will remember the code and connect you to that network automatically. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

Generating a key only happens when you choose WEP as the security. You were advised to choose WPA2 not WEP. Choosing WPA2 will ask you to enter a shared key/passkey. Try following these instructions.

That would be fine as it will rule out wireless speeds. However it's not connected to the cable modem itself directly and Virgin would want you to do that to rule out any problems with the Belkin router.

thankyou for that post to you really are a star! youv explained everything so perfectly!!

You need to set up this security with ONE Pc or laptop directly connected to the router with an ethernet cable.
After you have set up the security you connect wirelessly via the other laptops - at that point you will be asked to enter the security key you have just set up. You will need to do this with EACH laptop/PC but only for that first time. Anytime you use it thereafter you will not need to do this.0 -
