Are you on Cable broadband with Virgin?
Do you know the name of your local telephone exchange, if so do an exchange search on Samknows website to see if any LLU ADSL operators are available to you.
That gum you like is coming back in style.
  • it is wireless
but yes it is cabel into the house

no idea about the second thing, our phone is virgin aswell? is that what you mean?

    Go here:

enter your phone number, hit the 'Check' button, and it'll show you what's available.

There aren't any LLU providers operating at your exchange - so you're going to find it difficult to get unlimited broadband at a cheap price.

What Virgin broadband package are you on currently and how much do you pay?

Virgin do throttle speeds if you download too much during peak periods - so this could be effecting your broadband speeds, especially if your streaming a lot of music/movies.

There are BT Wholesale providers that offer unlimited broadband deals, but these aren't going to be much cheaper than Virgin to be honest.

How much are you currently paying / what Virgin broadband package do you have? This will help to know what is going to be cheaper / faster for you.

is that it? whats it maen by 20gb download how much would that be?
  • If you're online a lot, and there's several of you, and you're using youtube and watching movies and downloading... 20GB is not going to be any use to you.

I think dylanuk probably gave you the "bad news". Not much choice and certainly not cheap for heavy users. I'm with BT, unlimited - (which isn't strictly true due to fair use policy) speeds supposedly up to 8mb (around 900kB/s), which we do get in the early morning, but in evenings it's much lower and crawls quite a bit with 4 of us using it. About £25 a month. I think plusnet do similar (80GB limit, but I think I read somewhere - this doesn't include your overnight use - overnight use is unlimited ? ) for £20 a month, but you could get cashback and first few months lower priced maybe.

You could try moving to Sweden - I heard they have decent internet ;)

As you're on VM size M... you'll be getting throttled if you download more than 1.5GB (1500MB) between 10am and 3pm, and you'll get throttled if you download more than 750MB between 4pm and 9pm.

Virgin Media speed throttling will cut your connection speed by 75% for around 5 hours.

If you and your sister are both streaming music, watching youtube, etc.. at the same time in the evening it's highly likely you're hitting the download threshold.

I'd agree with in spired2 and suggest Plusnet Premium, which costs £11.99 for 3 months, then £19.99 in your area. It is limited to 80GB but this should be enough for your usage and is totally unlimited between midnight and 8am - so you can schedule downloads to run then to help keep your usage down.
  • i mean we dont need an amazing package, at all.

But you said above you need 'good speed for downloading/youtube/movie buffering'? Which seems at odds with the above? All these activities eat up bandwidth. Doesn't matter if you stream it or downoad it, it's all part of your bandwidth usage.
But your first issue is that all you have now is VM cable service. So to get any other broadband service you first need to get a BT line installed. Without it you cannot get any other ADSL broadband service. Once that's in, you can apply for broadband with your preferred supplier.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
