You could always download Thunderbird and use it.

I've posted on the Virgin newsgroups before - they were able to locate my details and I never provided any info, not even my email address. I suspect they were able to use my connection info.

Quite right - you don't need to post any information to identify yourself to them.

Yes they can also locate the user from the I.P. address. The username just saves them a bit of time.

Personally I'd rather not be posting details on a newsgroup.

    Can't see the 2nd picture.

However from the 1st picture - you need to take the blue lead out of the Belkin router ( the silver box is your cable modem - it is an old one!) and plug it into the laptop.
Before you do this unplug the cable modem ( the silver box) and switch off the laptop. Plug everything in and then switch on the cable modem first - wait for the led lights to steady and then switch on the laptop.

    Now run the test.

That's an old modem! NTL 100 if I remember correctly,As in jem's set up above, the white coax cable should connect into a white box on the wall (the Isolator) then out to the ETB (Grey box on the front of the house)
    Some questions;
    Do you have Cable TV?
    If so,how many boxes?
    Does the interactive work?
If so,the problem is inside your house.
Are you useing cabling supplied by NTL/VM? If not and your dad, being an electrician, ran up a coax cable useing shop bought coax (tv cable) then that could be the cause as it's no use for cable installations.
Are all the connections tight & secure?
Are all unused ports on the Isolator/splitter terminated with a 75OOhm cap?
Has the cable running thru the garden ever been damaged & repaired?
    see pics:

    **Note the are different types**
    75Ohm Terminator Cap:

If you can post a photo of your set up where it comes into the house & the isolator where the modem is It's help me identify the possible problem with the set up.

That confirms a fault either with your cable modem or line.

Now get on the newsgroups or get Dad to phone 150 and report the fault.
Do you have Cable TV? YES
If so,how many boxes? ONE SKY BOX (We have just canceld our subscription)

Your Sky box isn't cable TV - it's satellite TV. Spike meant do you have any Virgin TV boxes.
