so if ive kept all my bank statements since 2000 then i can skip step one and move on to sending a list of charges i want refunded (from last 6 years max) to my local branch (recorded delivery)?

do i need to send copies of the bank statements with the charges on or can i just list them in the letter?

Do a list with the charges detailing the amount, description and date it was applied to your account.

If you use the Interest Calculator in Martin's article, link in my signature, you can print that out and it will work out the interest as you go along.
  • does anybody know if you can claim back charges from credit card companines if you no longer have the account number? if you can do it what do you put down as the reference number? any help from anybody would really be appreciatted!!!

  • Hi all, another newbie I'm afraid, have been a fan of Martins for a long time, but this is 1st post.
I am helping a friend reclaim her charges as she doesn't have a PC (rare breed lol) & the1st letter to HSBC went off on 12th Feb, & today she received a letter stating that 'unfortunately, we are unable to locate the account number ******that you have queried', & asking that she ring them. The account no. is requested when going through the options, & when someone finally answered it was with 'how can I help you Mrs D', so the account is obviously active & working. They then spent about 15 mins putting her on hold, saying they had no knowledge of this letter, & unable to trace the person that wrote it. I think a definate case of delaying tactics, so we will go to the bank tomorrow & see how it goes face to face. Have you any suggestions on how to deal with this?

Started the process on December 9th 2006, made an offer at the end of January 2007 for £750. I declined of course and threatened to take to court in my letter dated 1st of Feb. And today I recieved a lovely letter offering me the full amount which will be deposited in my account very shortly!! Yippy! Thank you Martin, you will never know how much this has helped my little family xxxxx:money:

Bit of a long story, but here it goes...

Been with HSBC since starting uni and I thought their customer service was great. About four years ago my boyfriend and I decided we needed a joint account so we could pay household bills. My other half got into trouble and couldn't afford repayments on his debts . HSBC suggested having a managed loan which was supposed to decrease his montly payments. His monthly payments were smaller (only slightly) but weren't even covering the interest they were charging on the loan (30%). HSBC stated that payments for loan HAD to come out of the joint account as the accounts had been linked. The Direct Debit/Standing Order didn't go through for about 3 months for the repayment and when my other half phoned HSBC up to tell them they hadn't taken the money they demanded the arrears to be paid. There was no way my other half could afford to pay £1500 in one go and so the direct debit bounced. At this time we weren't using the account and had both set up accounts with other banks. My other half phoned HSBC to change the direct debit to his new account but HSBC refused. He told them he was no longer using the account and his wages were getting paid into his new account so he would not be able to pay the direct debit from his old account. HSBC still refused to change it and still continued to try to take money out of the joint account. The account didn't have an overdraft facility as this had been a condition of the managed loan, but due to the charges applied by HSBC for them trying to take out their own direct debit the balance was about £100 overdrawn.

Because of the balance on the joint account, HSBC cancelled the overdraft facility on my single account (still to this day, 14 months later, I have not received a letter stating this) and withdrew my credit card. As things were abit tight before I started really struggling paying my own debt and charges started to get applied to my account. A couple of months I had £100 worth of charges each month applied. Then I saw an article on this website about reclaiming them back. As I still owed HSBC the balance of my overdraft I had with them (as I couldn't afford to pay it back quickly) I decided to wait until I had paid or nearly paid it off.

I sent the 2nd letter for my single account (as I could still access all my statements on line) to HSBC to the Canada Sq address on the 29th Jan. I received a letter around a week later stating they were looking into it. Waited another week and still hadn't received a full response. Type'd up the LBA letter, but forgot to send it and received a letter this morning saying £465 would be refunded to my account if I accepted their offer.

Sent the letter back to them today (post from our local box gets collected at 18:30) and hopefully should have the money in my account in the next 10 days!

Can't try for the joint account as we agreed and settled with the DCA for a lower amount, but I'm so glad I did for my single account and it was so easy - no hassle at all.

Thanks Martin and the rest of MSE.com!
