I want to claim the unfair charges from Natwest from a joint account. I came off the joint account in Sept 06 as ex was spending the bill money and opened my own account for my salary and to pay bills. He is moving out next week and the divorce is final on 6th March.
As the account is still active but in ex's name only have I got the right to claim the charges back?
I would willingly give him half as anything I (we) get back would be a bonus. However, I dont think he would be as generous if the refund was paid into the account I am claiming for which is solely in his name!!
Can anyone advise please??0 -

Thanks Edinburghlass - I found this thread earlier today but unfortunately none of the posters had the same problem as me, i.e. had a joint a/c with ex but a/c now in ex's name only.
Oh well I'l go for it and see what happens - nothing to lose eh?0 -
Bank NatWest
Amount Claimed £1338.87
Amount Paid £1254
The Story.
I wrote to my bank originally asking for £784. They replied within 14 days and offered me the full amount. In the letter accompanying the offer they said I could claim referral charges and cheque guarantee charges. I then re-calculated and asked them for £1254 plus £84. 87 interest. I had a letter after 12 days to say they would repay me £1254 but not the £84.87 interest. Success........Thank you.:T

Hi I wrote to the coop bank to ask for a list of my charges which i recieved yesterday however I dont fully understand what the statement says and consequently what I should be claiming. There are five columns on the statement 1-headed commission which totals1,670 pounds 2-credit interest which totals 24.56, 3- debit interest which totals 225.48, 4-fees which totals 840.00, and 5-tax on credit interest which totals 6.09. Can anyone explain these to me and which ammounts I should be claiming for.
Cheers

Princess-as wrote:HELP!!! Can anyone advise me what to do next? I have filed an online claim against Barclays and the 28 days was up yesterday so at about 8.45 am I logged on to Money Claim Online and filed a Judgement by Default. This went through. Today I received a letter from my local court saying Barclays filed a defence, this is dated yesterday. In the defence papers Barclays mentioned that I can only claim back six years and when I looked back at the list of charges I am claiming for there are 4 (£80 + interest) that are going back a little too far. I think when I requested the statements they must have sent me more than I asked for. Does this mean I won't win in court? What should I do next? I'm really felling down as I am worried I may have blown it by not checking the dates more thoroughly!0

Post 4 in this thread regarding what you can and can't claim..
http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=304064
However you need to phone the bank and find out exactly what the totals mean, obviously debit interest can't be claimed but you need to check what is included in the commission and fees totals.0 -
I've checked the threads (particularly Natwest) for this but can't find an answer.
When the charges are refunded do they have to be a bank transfer to the account they refer to (a joint account which I no longer have) or can you specifically request a cheque or a different bank account?
I'll be damned if I do all the work and the money gets refunded to my ex's account!!
The account in question is Natwest and I still have a current account there.0 -

First Direct
Lloyds TSB
GE Capital
MBNA
Morgan Stanley
Intelligent Finance
Halifax
Barclaycard
I originally sent "Letter 1" on the 16th January 2007; this was from the templates found on this website. To date I have only had responses back from First Direct and Barclaycard. First Direct have issued my statements so I can work out my charges, Barclaycard have written explaining that they will respond with the information within the "Legal" 40 days.
I have now sent (13/02/2007) the "letter 2" to first direct claiming £2668.50, didn't push for interest will keep that in the back pocket, could be useful has a bargaining tool.0 -
As with many others on this site, I have been a complete prat with money and felt embarrassed to challenge the incredibly high bank charges because I felt it was my fault.
Well, once I had got past that, it was incredibly easy. Wrote on 31/1/07 to Barclays asking for £530 for the last three years and today (16/2/07) had a letter offering me the total amount WITHOUT PREJUDICE. I am accepting gratefully.
This takes me within only £150 of totally clearing my debt with Barclays and a determination to never, ever have an overdraft again.
Thanks Martin and everyone for showing how good it is too stand up for fairness!
