Not the largest amount claimed back, but I got a £25 charge from Nat West Credit card for not setting up my DD on time. The offered and credited £12.50 back to me, then after the second letter, they paid the whole amount. Keep on hassling them !0

I have done a deal today which I am very happy about. I am to be repaid 87% of what I claimed. I would not have got it without the knowledge and confidence that this site gave me.
I was going to put my Moneyclaim in this week. The reason for this post is that when the banks cleverly put in a late writen offer it can potentailly muddy the waters. I am not sure if I got it right as I rang them and declined the initial final offer of £820 on Friday and demanded full settlement as my letter before action had been issued making my position clear. The person at the Halifax got defensive and I did too. So that was it.
I then wondered if I had made an error, and a question raised by Rex this morning (had my phone call given them a potential defence - and thus could my refusal to negotiate at that stage be seen as unreasonable?) made me think about it. It all worked out well in the end as a deal has been done. I have got £1350. Just by waiting 3 days and haggling, I got an extra £530. Well, they do say the Halifax gives you eXtra!!
I have saved the hassle of court claims etc. and time too, which was the main driver really. I am not sure if there is a definitive answer as many posts on here have been in a similar vein. It is a hard decision to make if you are offered a large sum of money that is short of what you want. It's clever stuff!
If there is a lesson, it is to keep to the path (that was the advice given to that bloke in 'An American Werewolf In London' and look what happened to him when he ignored it, lol) - if you know what i meanHalifax WON! Claimed £1549 on 8th Jan 2007, Settled for £1350 on 29th Jan, Paid 7th Feb.
MBNA (Virgin / Alliance Credit Card charges): WON! Claimed £419 on 17 March, finally offered £425! on 5 June)
Natwest Credit Card: WON! Claimed £250, got 100% + interest + court costs too.
Northern Rock: Mortgage Discharge Fee: WON! Claimed £100. Offered £90 and accepted it.
Natwest Bank / RBS: WON! Claimed £400. Got 100% + interest + court fees back.

I have a business account (sole trader) with Barclays, do the same rules apply for claiming excess charges or are you only allowed to claim on personal accounts?0

HSBC
Claimed £699.
The offered £622.
Easy. Followed all the steps, got a massive wad of past statements as well as my £10 cheque back. Although they still haven't accepted liability I've settled for their offer. Do it if you haven't yet - you've got nowt to loose!0 -
As I said in a different thread......
Claimed £628 plus £134 interest on 17/01/07
Offered £628 on 22/01/07.
Accepted by me today.
Very happy.
Couldn't have done it without this site though. Brilliant advice. Can't thank you enough. Been spreading the word to whoever is prepared to listen.0 -
Bank: NatWest
Amount claimed: £217.00
Amount paid: £217.00
Result! Sent the first standard letter which they responded to with an offer of £76 for my last two fees as they could not understand how I had arrived at the total I stated...despite enclosing a schedule of charges levied!
I then wrote back, advising them that I rejected their offer of £76 and required the full refund of £217 and enclosed another schedule for their information.
Phoned the branch on a couple of occasions to chase and they said that all complaints of this nature have been centralised to their Customer Relations Unit, whom I received a letter from this morning with their offer in full.
I have accepted their offer and think that I will now progress matters with other banks, although of course I need to remember that "we believe that the charges are for providing services and that they are not penalties or charges for default" - no, of course they're not, after all you did me a service for bouncing my direct debits!
My advice - go for it...you really don't have a lot to lose!
