  • Ignore the above, called again and got a really nice, helpful Irish lady who put me on silver @ £9.99 with first month free. Didn't ask for the router because I already have one.

I'd just like to clarify a few things with AOL, we have been with AOL silver for a fair few years now and always had to use their rubbish software to access the internet. We kept on having problems, random disconnections etc.

(and could only have one computer on at a time as we had no network)

So recently I bought a wireless router for my student house and tried it at home, after getting the details for the wireless connection to input into the router info box it worked better than before. It really was 24hour no disconnections or whatever, it was more stable and more reliable.

The AOL offer came out (12 months @ 14.99) so joined that got the free wireless router, threw away the CD's that came with it (that force you to use the AOL software), and it still works fantastic. I feel sorry for those AOL users that don't know they can access AOL without using the software, as it really is dreadful (hogs resources, and some how affects the connection).

Anyway most wireless routers are fully compatible with AOL just get the info from here: http://www.wifigear.co.uk/article_info.php?articles_id=34

    Hope that helps

(Since going wireless and not using the software we have had no reason to call up the rubbish customer support, which we did have to before, quite a lot!)

Just to let you know, you have been able to use AOL without going through the software for the last 4 or 5 years or so.
  • Hi all,

Is AOL Silver still for £14.99 an offer? I'm out of date as I went on hols for a while and moved flat plus having a problem to sign on (on dial-up at the mo until broadband is activated (long story  ). Thinking to quit aol if I have any more problems.

    Thanks TAJ

My first bill with AOL was for £17.09. I rang up to get an explanation because I was under the impression the first month was free as well. I was told only the dial up that I was offered (but never even used) while I was waiting to connect to broadband was free.

The £17.09 was a pro rata charge for the first month and £9.99 for the next month in advance. I got them to refund the pro rata charge as it didn't make sense and couldn't possibly be pro rata from the date I was connected until my next billing period.

The first month free seems a bit misleading and a bit of a con. Has anyone got their first month broadband free?

Yes I did. I used the dial up service for just over three weeks , following the E7even debacle, then cancelled. I was offered £9.99 a month , plus free modem. As I was going to go with Primus, I declined. Primus couldn't come up with the goods, so I contacted AOL again, for the £9.99 deal. They said I could have another month free, using dial up, until my broadband service was connected.
Broadband was connected within a week at the beginning of August. I still haven't paid them a penny, and I've been using their services since 01/07/06. I'm due to be billed on 31/09/06. Bills for the previous 2 months show as £0.00
