Don't know if this is new or I've just missed it, or my maths is rubbish. This seems like a reliable way to get cheap broadband if you haven't jumped in yet, without paying upfront or paying for a modem or connection, free email support, and an 0870 helpline, which although is not as good as freephone, is much better than some premium set ups. Possibly also an option for ex-e7even victims who want a cheap connection from a company that will not go bust.
AOL Silver (1Mbps)
1st Month FREE
Next Six months £14.99
Then £17.99 per month
Total cost for 13 months = £197.88
less Quidco Cashback of £45 = £152.88 (see https://www.quidco.com)
= UNDER £12 PER MONTH FOR AOL BROADBAND, FREE CONNECTION AND MODEM.

Have they dumped their proprietary login-in/browser solution?
Can one now use any browser/program with AOL?
And where did you read about e7-ners? There is no mention of any special package for them on AOL web site0 -

There is no special package for ex-e7even users. This is available to anyone. I just thought ex-e7even users may be amongst those interested. The "special" bit is being sure to apply via https://www.quidco.com to get £45 cashback. AOL then offer 1 month free and the next six months reduced rate. This is a 12 month contract so must be looked at the whole cost over the period.0 -
That is off course if quidco tracks and pays out, and they don't call them AO-HELL for nothing0

Alternatively, you can get an ADSL router instead which would do all the hardwork for you and more importingly save you from using their dreaded software/browser. You would have to access your AOL email account via IMAP, or alternatively, your a web-based email account in case you change providers in the future.
If you're in a telewest area (check here) then telewest do 2mb (twice as fast as AOL's 1mb) broadband for only £14.99 per month for the first year. A total of £179.88 for the year. I'm not sure if you can use quidco with telewest to save more money though.
Telewest's broadband is better than AOL's in many ways and telewest use an 0845 number for support but you can get the geographical number from sayno website to save even more money.0 -
Not sure if someone has already posted this. But I'm posting it hoping that it will benefit someone.
My AOL silver contract was about to end. As I was paying £17.99/month on it I decided to move to TalkTalk and called up AOL to cancel my connection when the contract ends.
When I told the cust service rep the reason for my decision to move away from AOL, she offered to match the TalkTalk Pricing, if I take AOL Talk on my phone line.
My monthly charge has now reduced from £17.99 to £9.99 for AOL Silver, and I have taken the Pay as you go option on AOL Talk which does not have any monthly charge. I only have to pay for the calls that I make.
Effectively I am paying £11 for BT Line rental + £9.99 for my AOL Silver which is the same as the talktalk pricing. The drawback is that it does not include the free calls. However a benefit is that you do not have to pay the upfront fees that you need to pay for TalkTalk contract and also there is no 18 months lock in.0 -

You can but you have to still login via their software though and minimise it.

you dont need to use aol's software to login. there is a way round it. if you are interested let me know and i'll post info on how to do it. its not that hard. i made a mistake of signing upto aol. dont like their software so i use explorer without any need to open aol and sign in that way0 -

I know having a router means you don't have to have their annoying software but didn't know there was a way of logging in to AOL without their software installed/running.
Thanks in advance.0 -
I'd be wary of signing up to AOL, and I'm with them! (But only till September). Their customer service is awful, I'm sure I posted on here about the bad experience I had a few weeks back, no broadband for 2 weeks and given the run around constantly. Eventually had to get my neighbour (IT technician) to speak to them to try to find out what the problem was, they cut him off 4 times cos they didn't want to speak to someone who knew what they were talking about! Avoid at all costs!Total debt May 2005 £83,232
