I've been with AOL now for a few years and I'm on AOL platinum upgraded free from 2 to 8 megs. So far so good but I'm getting a bit fed with connection fails, after ringing up the help line a few I sometimes find it very difficult to understand the guy on the other end,so after hanging up and trying a few more times and eventially getting through to someone I can understand they have bee very helpful. But I'm thinking of changing to what sound a decent service of 16 meg with sky for £10.00. But how do I get my Mac address anybody help please

If you have just upgraded to ADSL Max it can take up to 10 days to stabalise, this is how it works while it finds a suitable line speed for your connection :)

silly question but what is ADSL Max?
the tech support guy from virgin net said that this may be the cause of our connection problems, we live at the outer edges of broadband area and can only get 512 speed, had no problems for 18months but since last month have only been on broadband for 1week out of 4!, he said that this was the time adsl max was switched on and may be drawing strength away from our area?
    any ideas
    thanks

    Hello

We are on aol gold paying 24.99.I have just tried to get this reduced, they would only offer me 19.99 plus a new 12 month contract. I have declined this offer. Is it worth trying again

    any help appreciated

You don't need to leave for another ISP, just ring them up! see the AOL thread in the Internet access forum.

    HTH

    ;)

I rang them today but there was no hint of reducing the monthly fee.
But I did say I was not sure yet who to transfer to and the man just said you will need to have a transfer number so maybe when I do that they will start talking about staying with them on a better deal. Not found the AOL thread yet either - well I am a Gran;) - but it is taking me a while to get used to this board.

Its the new system BT are using in there exchanges which enable you to get up to 8mb, the previous maximum was 2mb but was stable, ADSL Max can be unstable and alot of people are worse of having it enabled on there line.

You won't get a better price than that for AOL Gold. You should have taken it. The £9.99 price that is talked about on here is for AOL Silver.

Everyone beware! They have no clue at all.

I migrated Thursday to what should have been Platinum up to 8mb for the free month. I can get 3mb here but it was connecting at half meg.

Called tech support who eventually put me through to a customer support rep who asked bt to upgrade me.

It took until last night to do that but it is still only 1mb and no faster but now it will not connect.

On to tech support again who did test the line and it will connect using the bt_test logon but fails using mine and the aol test one so he put me through to level 2 to test further. So back to india this time and was told my router is un supported even though I have been told it is. It is a netgear dg834gt. She then said that because my line is being upgraded to 1mb that it may not work until the 26th which is when it should be fully done by and basically goodbye!

They have no idea. If you get Ireland they seem to know more though.

So no connection at the moment and currently using a neighbors wireless to send this!

So is it still the 14 day thing as far as cooling off? If so I may just leave as I have no internet. But who else is there to go to at a decent price unlimited?

    Rant over

    Simon.

    :naughty:

Feel better after your rant? Actually you were told that it may not work correctly until the 26th, which is the 10 day training period required by ADSL Max to establish the fastest reliable speed for your line. This would be the same for any ISP when upgrading to ADSL Max so perhaps you should find out what you are talking about before you have your next rant!

But I have not been put on max I have been put on 1meg as they have F****d up. And surely it should connect just a little? It will not connect at all using the aol settings mine or there test ones but is fine using the bt test one?
