Yes, but you, and other 'seasoned' compers, probably haven't seen the updated comment in the Comping Guide (a couple of weeks ago):
I and most compers including seasoned ones constantly visit the comping guide and contribute and help to maintain the guide, I and many others where aware of the above
and most compers are also aware that the advised limit (notice it is only advised) has decreased considerably since the comping guide was first implemented
Howether as no other way of keeping track of competitions has been provided or implemented compers are still using the outdated method of subscriptions for tracking there entries
you also have to understand it is also very time consuming to manually trawl through and delete outdated subscriptions as you can only delete 20 entries at a time and you would also need to check every subscribed link to make sure that it was something that you wanted to delete
and so you would have to check and trawl through
1,000 subsciptions = 50 pages
10,000 ditto = 500 pages
50,000 ditto = 2,500 pages
80,000 ditto = 4,000 pages
on a good week there can be roughly 100 pages of competitions, I know that most compers don't enter every competition but if they did they would be be subscribed to 2,000 links
you will also see that the advised limit can be reached in a matter of weeks
as there isn't a quick way of deleting the subscriptions, I am sure you will understand that most people don't bother and that is I why we have come to the DB being overloaded and the need for enforced deletion of subscribed links
it is not the compers fault as they can only use the tools that they have been provided with, it should have been addressed a long time ago before we got to the present sorrowful situation
hope that this go's some way to help you understand why we compers are kicking up such a fuss about the proposed subscription changes0 -
to be honest in response to the subscription changes, as a comper I only subscribe to comps that I have posted or posted on, hence I have less than 1000 subscriptions, most of which are nothing to do with competitions. I have a clean out of subscriptions at least twice a month and clear out any with expiry dates that have passed
I cant see that the subscription changes will make much of a difference to me to be honest:DWeight Loss - 102lb0 -

That's great! :T If everyone did that, then we wouldn't be in this position.0 -
oh, and to add to keep track of what I enter I just use the thanks button (and memory):DWeight Loss - 102lb0

likewise hjb123, I only subscribe to comps that I have posted or posted on, I have at present 3,060 subscriptions that I was automatically subscribed to,
I also use the thanks button as a means of tracking my entries
unfortunately unlike yourself, I don't have the time to review and delete them,
so it would be great for me if as munchkim suggested #15 they automatically deleted all subscriptions when a comp was moved to GAME OVER
even better would be ferni's little enter button #58 to track the entries
but I guess all in all like you the proposed changes wont' really affect me that much either0 -
Its all very well delaying it until next Thursday but does that mean anything is going to be done with regards to the possibilty of an "entered" button or something similar to allow tracking of competitions entered or even freebies applied for? Even the automatic removal of subscriptions for threads when they are moved into particular areas like Game over for example would be better than nothing? I think theres been some great suggestions on here but there hasnt been any feedback from mse as to whether any of these suggestions are viable or likely to happen? Thanks to all posters and contributers :beer:0

I am a comper and am obviously in the minority that don't use the subscription option.
mountainchrisriver is right - this isn't a comping board, it is here to offer (fantastic) advice and help on many areas, why should us compers be potentially slowing down the boards. I have been using MSE to comp for 2 years (after reading lots of great advice on here for a few years previous to that) and can't understand the obsession with subscribing - I have managed to get myself a good routine of entering competitions by just using the 'thanks' button - and trust me, I'm the laziest person imaginable, I tried the subscribing option but found I was wasting time with it.
Will also add that I think it is fantastic having the compers board on here and basically at times, my small wins have helped us eat!!!! And yes, an 'entered' button would be fantastic but I see comping as a hobby and I'm not going to throw my toys out of the pram because this button doesn't exist.
Compers need to think about everyone on MSE - we all think we are this happy contented bunch in a little cocoon - that's a load of cr*p - please think about what is best for everyone.
(Bring on the abuse e.g. yes I know I don't contribute much blah blah blah)0 -
As a comper, I basically agree with hjb and Why oh why.
I only subscribe to Threads I start and post on and manually remove these again when they are either game over or more than 4 weeks since any posts, if they are not comps. I currently only have 60 subscriptions but it's usually between 100 - 150.
I keep track of comps entered by using the thanks button and find it just as quick to look to see if I've thanked as it is to set a subscription. It will probably be even quicker if removing old subscriptions speeds the site up generally.0
