  • Hi folks,

This planned operation seems to have raised some interesting points and I'd like to thank you all for contributing your concerns and ideas to the thread.

To ensure that everyone on the site has the best chance to be aware of these changes, we've pushed back the date of the subscription cull to next Thursday, October 15th 2009.

    A better solution
If there was a button you could click on to say that you have entered a comp and this put a little tick on the main page then mser's wouldn't need to subscribe to every thread thereby freeing the much needed resources

this would also be hugely beneficial to everyone on mse who regularly enter competitions as they would be able to see at a glance from the main page which comps they have entered without clicking on multiple links only to find that they have already entered

    You mean like this? :p

I mentioned this on another thread, but maybe the compers could have a separate system to keep track of what they have entered?

Say a 25fm2at.gif button that once clicked would indicate on the board that you had entered that one?

The "thanks" button wasn't intended to be used to show what comps had been entered after all.

Some of us like to keep old threads as reference material. I was wondering about a way around automatic deletion (other than posting on them now, which would probably get us in trouble :D ). What about the 'like it' button..? If a thread had a certain 'likability level', then it could be exempt from [STRIKE]being deleted[/STRIKE] having it's subscriptions removed..?

Since I made that little mistake above, I got the impression that someone above though that old threads were being removed. If I understand correctly, threads/posts won't be touched; only subscriptions to them ;)

On the note someone made about people posting in old threads. I personally hugely favour new posts in old threads, rather than yet more threads about the same thing. Yes, it is lots of reading, but if you're trying to find out about something, you're probably going to look up and read other threads on that subject anyway. I think of it as recycling: better organisation and a little less drain on resources..? (I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong there :p ). (I note the poster spoke of 'random' posts, so I may have assumed a little too much..)

Thanks, and keep up the good work 'Team MSE' :T

to all the compers moaning, spend some time bookmarking your comps
after the clear out and susbscription changes you can resubscribe to them.
all they are doing is clearing out old subscriptions and changing the default setting.
there will be 000's of subscriptions nobody will notice or care at losing

As custardy has not responded to my offer in #56 I have decided to re-post what I said in response to the above post yesterday this will not be deleted again or retracted in any way

The compers posting on this thread are not moaning as you call it but merely putting forward there views and constructive criticism they are doing this to to help and contribute to the forum for the benefit of everyone

as some Mser's on competition time are suscribed to 80,000 plus threads it would be impossible to bookmark each and every single thread,

they are subscribing to each and every thread because they where advised to do so by the comping guide which every newcomer is advised to read

if you where a true comper and not just someone who occasionally visit's competition time you would already know the above and not make such meaningless comment

lol why thank you for being so condescending
the fact is its about freeing up resources on the DB
given you are a self professed 'real' comper im sure you can see how all those 80,000 subscriptions would be a drain on the resources of the forum?
how many of those 80,000 are live comps?
however if im expempt from comment from not being in the club then feel free to further exclude me

If I where condescending towards you it is was because I found your comment downright rude, tactless, derogatory and inconsiderate to say the least,

everyone is free to make comment, as this is an open forum, and I wouldn't dream of trying to exclude you or anyone else for that matter in open debate,

howether it seems to me that you are against open debate and constructive criticism and would prefer to be negative and deconstructive, this has been proven by calling fellow Mser's "moaners" who unlike you actually know what they are talking about and who are only trying to further the debate

I think it would be fab to have an "entered" button on the competition forum. It would make life so much simpler......

Some of the threads that are seasonal may be affected, such as gardening threads which i have been refering back to, I guess I can look for them again but I may find that I find even more interesting threads to subscribe too.... lol

anything that makes this site better has got to be good, its such a fab, useful site!!

Yes, but you, and other 'seasoned' compers, probably haven't seen the updated comment in the Comping Guide (a couple of weeks ago):
MoneySavingExpert.com Insert: Could compers please try to ensure you subscribe to no more than 10,000 threads please as it can slow down the forum. Many thanks!
