Now that sounds even more contentious than the thanks button!
Personally, I don't find the thanks count an indicator of anybody's 'value' as a contributor and, as trafalgar has said, that was never its intention. I just miss the ease with which you could acknowledge somebody else's post without needing to add another post to do so.0 -
Trix wrote:Seeing as the thread about the thanks button in DT got locked after my last post (don't THINK it had anything to do with MY post in particular
) and people are commenting on it here, thought I'd add my views here as well.
The thanks button was originally introduced to stop people making one word 'thanks' posts that made threads longer and bumped them to the top for no reason in particular, and to (try) and stop some people using it to 'bump up' their posts counts.
The thanks button is 'supposed' to be for if you found the comment useful, but is used now for any post contributing to someones thread, if you agree with someone, if you found something funny and sometimes for reasons I can't work out
I like being able to say thanks to people without having to just post the one word, but think that the thanks (too many 'th' words in one line - glad I'm not saying this, it'll be like a tongue twister) counter under peoples names should be gone and people just get some kind of message in the same way as a pm to tell them they have been thanked, who by and where. Maybe the person saying thanks could be given option boxes to check to say why they're saying thanks as well, or be able to add a personal note.
Getting a message like this would save me thinking 'what have I been thanked for now' when my counter goes up as well
That sounds like a great idea, trix. I'd thank you for it, if I could.
That way, you would still be able to acknowledge other people's posts without having all the contentious stuff about competitions and whether people are using the thanks button 'for the right reasons' etc.
It would leave you with a real warm glow to get a message saying that you have been thanked by 'x' for whatever reason and people wouldn't feel self-conscious or unappreciated by having a low thanks total on display.0 -
I really like what Digg.com are doing. But their system is new and not finished yet. Maybe one day forums will work that way.
If you like a post you click the the thumbs up, if not the thumbs down.
I just usually scroll down looking only at the posts that have had the most 'diggs' listed on the right.
If a post gets too many negative diggs, it turns greay and you only see it by clicking on 'show comment'
If a thread gets too many negative reports, it's automatically removed. They're working on a way now to have a bin where you can look at the buried posts and they can be resurrected if you think it went there wrongly
Maybe one day0 -

Haven't read all the thread yet (I'm in the stupid corner again )
But I have to agree - on both points0 -

Trix wrote:At the risk of sounding like a parrott  (already said this in DT).....
I certainly wouldn't give more weight to someone because they have a higher thanks counter - as I've already said before, it is used for things such as 'that was funny' as well as lots of other reasons so maybe 'person A' is just funnier than 'person B' IYSWIM
I've used it in most areas of the site, and I agree.
It's the quality of the post that matters imo, not the quantity of posts made.
Which is why some sections of the board, imho, don't get the recognition they deserve, like on the Techie section. It might be one to one advice so doesn't help many people, but it takes time to solve one person's problems more than it does to say thanks for posting up a freebie.
I'd rather have 0 post and 0 thanks ..... fwiw. If I find a post helpful - I'd rather vote for it as post of the month. Even when it doesn't help me as such0 -
Before the thanks button went missing along with the totals I had around 2200 thanks in about 230 posts. I would say that 99% of my thanks came from me posting competitions on the competitions forum. As most of these came from one part of the whole site it is likely that the people who thanked me were more often than not the same band of prehaps 20 people. My thanks count was built up in around 4 weeks.
This does not mean that the information was of benifit to the whole site but only to the people who enter the comps.
In my honest opinion the button should not return. I started posting competitions on this site the day after I won a competition that had been posted by someone on the site. It was a way of saying thank you for the fact that without the comp being posted, I would never have won the prize.
Normally, the competitions thread will have 20 to 30 new threads per day. I think today there was 8. Prehaps the reduced number is because the thanks button has been removed. Time will tell!3.795 kWp Solar PV System. Capital of the Wolds0 -

Really weird! I now have been thanked 1 time in 1 post!
Yet I can't for the life of me find the post that has been thanked since the New Version started. Nptice that most people are still 0 - 0 . sra must have a secret with 3 from 3. Still, all good fun !!"0844 COSTS YOU MORE"0 -

Just forces us to be brief, not a bad thing for waffly me!!! :rotfl:
the abuse team have asked us to send the following pm to any member we see with a large signature
SIGNATURE SIZE
Hi, Martin’s asked me to pm this in these circumstances: Sorry to ask but your signature is too large and disturbs the flow of some threads slightly. Would you mind reducing it? (Please see this rule). If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com.
It refers to Martin's rule on signature size belowMSE_Martin wrote:SIGNATURES
Please ensure your signature takes up a minimum amount of space. Large signatures can make threads harder to read.
most people when asked have changed their signature with no problems
no-one has said that they mind and all have understood that for someone with a small pc screen a signature of 8 or more lines can take up half a pageas the smaller width screens condense the sigs into even more lines
it's the extra lines and jumping smilies that take up most room, and yes there are people with bigger sigs but it will take more than a few days for everyone to be pm'd and asked if they mind reducing itI am a Senior Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Wales, Small Biz MoneySaving, In My Home (includes DIY) MoneySaving, and Old style MoneySaving boards.
