Really weird! I now have been thanked 1 time in 1 post!
Yet I can't for the life of me find the post that has been thanked since the New Version started. Nptice that most people are still 0 - 0 . sra must have a secret with 3 from 3. Still, all good fun !!
I saw a post somewhere that said they were testing the thanks function

Some of you have been tested on....without you knowing it

Look at edi's count.. she's had all sorts of secret testing done on her

I haven't managed to read all the posts in this thread yet, but personally I would like the thanks button back, but I don't think there should be a count of how many times people have been thanked.

I asked for a discount code on the codes forum, somebody has supplied one and as I wanted to say thanks, the post has now been bumped up to the top by me saying thanks. It would have been much easier just to press the thanks button. Please bring it back!
  • Ive just noticed that some people have there thanks total back but other like me :'( dont... im still showing as zero all tho my total post count is now at the amount my thanks use 2 be

Will this be sorted eventually and will i get my total back ?
can any 1 answer me this.

    loops :)
    £2 coin savers club = £118
    20p saver club = £275.80 :T yippeeeee
  • Are the thanks on the way back in - lots of posters have thanks counts now(not me though  )
It's easier to get forgiveness than to ask permission ;)

Before the thanks button went missing along with the totals I had around 2200 thanks in about 230 posts. I would say that 99% of my thanks came from me posting competitions on the competitions forum. As most of these came from one part of the whole site it is likely that the people who thanked me were more often than not the same band of prehaps 20 people. My thanks count was built up in around 4 weeks.

This does not mean that the information was of benifit to the whole site but only to the people who enter the comps.

In my honest opinion the button should not return. I started posting competitions on this site the day after I won a competition that had been posted by someone on the site. It was a way of saying thank you for the fact that without the comp being posted, I would never have won the prize.

Normally, the competitions thread will have 20 to 30 new threads per day. I think today there was 8. Prehaps the reduced number is because the thanks button has been removed. Time will tell!
This example shows my point that if the thanks totals could relate to the board on which they were accumulated it would show people who the experienced knowledgeable members of that particular forum were and whose advice was to be given priority. However I do understand that it may not be possible to keep separate board specific tallies of "thanks"

Since the "thanks" button went there have been some individuals "thanking" people for specific posts. If too many people do this it devalues the thread as a whole as the new reader has to plough through a lot of posts which do not contain useful information, simply "thanks". So it will be better when the "thanks" button returns.

If the message reporting the number of thanks a post had recieved was reworded to remove the word "useful" it would be another improvement as most of the thanks generated on some boards have very little utilitarian value whatsoever.

I think the idea of rationing the number of "thanks" you can issue in any day to 20 and preventing posters repeat thanking the same person would curtail the "Thanking circles" and "empty threads" designed solely to generate "Free thanks" for non useful, not even funny, posts.

Hopefully I won't feel it necessary to repeat SRA's useful advice concerning the use of the "thanks button" in my signature.

At least it gives us a laugh at the expense of the "If you find my post useful please click the Thanks button" brigade ;)
    Can I help?

Ted, the number of thanks has already been discounted according to some standard, but for now nobody is able to judge why or which were deemed useful.

edit - in mid-post, the discount has been removed - who was watching me, and how did they know what I was about to say? :o :rotfl:

edit 2 - the total has changed, but not the number of thanked posts - still some fettling going on I think

:rotfl:Some people have been thanked anything from 1 to 200+ times in 0 posts. Definately fettling going on still ;)

  • Personally, I'm fine without the thanks button. At least it stops people starting threads purely to up their thanks count.
