Ted, the number of thanks has already been discounted according to some standard, but for now nobody is able to judge why or which were deemed useful.

edit - in mid-post, the discount has been removed - who was watching me, and how did they know what I was about to say? :o :rotfl:

edit 2 - the total has changed, but not the number of thanked posts - still some fettling going on I think
I'm not concerned about the current totals as they already include a fair bit of silliness.

Perhaps if the message under the posts read.

    x people appreciated this post.
    Rather that
x people found this post useful.

People should show their appreciation of particular posts regardless of whether or not that post had any moneysaving usefulness.

Still think a rationing system is the way to go if the software permits it together with the restriction on repeat posts for the same people, this would reduce the irritation factor for me of the thinly disguised "I'll thank you if you thank me and together we'll both increase our post&thanks totals" threads.

I dont see the problem with the whole thanks system.

But maybe a fairer way would be to still be able to thank people but not show their total on their profile

It is annoying to have threads keep being bumped up just to say thanks!!!!!

thanks button - :T - needed so threads aren't clogged up as previously mentioned...

thanks counter - - ditch this, no more squabbles over not being thanked enough, duplicated posts to gain thanks.. silly sigs asking to be thanked..

I don't feel so inclined to come here without the thanks button.

I often don't have time to write anything but felt I could make my presence felt with a click...

It seems sort of DEAD - I can't tell who's about - I don't want to add Everyone to my buddy list - the Thanks appearing (on anyone's post) gave an indication of how many active contributors were looking at a particular topic.

all the PMs I had have gone too  ..................and can someone please move the left margin in a bit it's as annoying as heck:rotfl:

Fully agree with the left margin.

I'm !!!!!! cos I made a great find and I was up to about 23 thanks for that find when it got withdrawn and the thread carried on for another 100 replies and got over 4000 views.

God knows how many peeps were unable to 'up my count'.

Y'know, it only matters because we have (well we did have) the thanks button. It wouldn't matter if we naver had it.

I thimk that's a great argument for not bringing it back. Most people post here to make contributions to the community for the benefit of everybody. If you've started a thread with 4000 views that should be all the indication you need that it's been useful and worthwhile.
What this forum is not is some sort of competition to get the most thanks. I've seen people explicitly asking for thanks in signatures and even making up fictitious posts to unfairly earn thanks.
    Can I help?

You're right it should not be a competition but more of what you can offer to this community. It is far more usefuil than clicking a thank you button, But I think people making people up to up their own thank you count is a bit extreme but probable i suppose. I myself sometimes see a thread and only wish to thank the user for offering up the information/advice and if I posted my gratitude each time I had some I would never be off this website and its already taking up a fair amount of mi time as it is. So I think the thank you button is good as it gives a particular recognition to a person for very helpful information. But back to my original question, is the thank you button being restored?

That is your opinion, of course.

An interesting title will get lots of views but the thanks are an opportunity for people to be polite and thank you for your efforts. Not the same thing, exactly, is it.

I think it rather ignorant to take advantage of a posting without letting the OP know that I appreciate his/her efforts.

On that particular thread 23 people were gratefull enough to say 'thank you' and many more would have liked the opportunity, I'm sure.
