trafalgar wrote:so if a long term useful member wanted some help but a touch of anonymity when 'feeling depressed'...........not much point in them posting really
It shouldn't matter if they are new or old.....................useful or useless,if you can help in some way surely
Good point Trafalgar.
But.
Look at the way e-bay works there needs to be a system for a member earn reliability /thanks for a forum to work effectively.
Especially on the internet. If a member on MSE has made 150 posts in 4 months and been thanked 30 times.
Other can probably assume he is a useful member.
If forum has no means to establish a members credibility / past track record it becomes a trolls paradise.0 -

I see your point ,how MSE isn't buying selling anything ,there is nothing to lose by answering a newbie anymore than something to gain by answering a regular.........................but I do see your point
the thanks button was merely to save space/bandwidth,it was never really meant to be a mark of how useful someone was ,not truely, because whats useful to one won't be useful to others
I much prefer to take people as I find, those who are being trolls/pains will soon become obvious ....................and some of those even have high thanks counts:rotfl:0 -
kathfisch wrote:Perhaps only have the tally on the person's profile - you'd have to actively look for it rather than it being on each post. At least then it wouldn't be so visible and so much a 'reputation' thing.
Or it could just be visible to the user themselves, on their profile or something, - as a matter of interest.
You're right about not judging people by their thanks count, now that I think about it. I am more likely to try to judge someone by their post count because often people who have been around a board for a while have plenty of experience and good advice to give. This is not always the case, obviously, before someone picks me up on that :rotfl:
As for the length of time a person has been a member and post counts - you're right that it isn't always a good way of judging someone either. I've been a member for 3 years now and although I read the forum most days, I'm not much of a 'chat' type poster so my number of posts isn't that high, but I have helped quite a few people. Others talk on here all day long so have clocked up massive amounts of posts but the posts may all be just chat on one board and they may never have advised at all in any board.I'm a little angelBUT A WHOLE LOTTA DEVIL

And of course some people automatically thank everyone who replied to them whether the information was useful or not.
So I 'd like to thank you all for your useful and useless information!0 -
Trafalgar you have been here longer than me and may know how to do this.
Why not set up a Poll regarding the Thanks button and lets see.
(maybe I will be the only voter, if no one else is bothered about the thanks button / count..but at least we will then know).
I think the MSE will be a lot weaker forum without the thanks button (though I do realise the thanks button is not a perfect system).0 -
Hi everyone,
Sorry for the downtime but MSE Neil and MSE Dimitar have been working hard to fix quite a few of the glitches in the background.
The Thankyou system is still proving problematic in this new version and will require some work to re-enable it but we're getting there. Please ignore any numbers you see in there at the moment as they are only a result of testing.
Thanks for your patience and your feedback.

Sorry Bestthingsinlifearefree but I'll give that one a miss if you don't mind, there have been many threads and polls on the thanks button..........most get locked or deleted ,usually because people have strong views on it one way or the other ,myself I have no problem with it and use it a lot
best to just leave it to the powers that be and as they want it ,it'll definately be back sooner or later and then the discussions/polls will start again anyways..................will be interesting to see if the 'unthank this poster' function gets put on too0 -
Lola.G wrote:I like the thanks button! You can show your appreciation of a person's post easily without replying with one word 'thanks' posts. I think the 'thanks count' was the problem. Could we not have the facility to simply thank a person without accumulating a thanks count?
It's just become such a habit now. I was automatically reaching for the thanks button for your post, Lola, just to say 'I agree'. Instead I have to make a whole post to say so!
I do miss the thanks button. I used to get annoyed with the whole thanks button debate that cropped up every 5 minutes whenever somebody was disgruntled that they hadn't been thanked enough times or whatever.
The innane thanks threads that appeared a few weeks ago also grated a bit. I must admit that I couldn't see the attraction of those 'free' thanks. Surely all the thanks were free in the first place? Getting a thanks for helping somebody or directing them somewhere seems a bit more worthwhile, but each to their own.
I will be glad when (if?!!) the thanks button is reinstated though. It's a bit like scratching an itch on a missing limb at the minute!0 -
I don't understand how I'm now showing a thanks score even though the thanks button isn't here anymore and everybody else is back on zero?0
