Trix wrote:Just to go back to these points (before it gets locked ), people posting in the freebie and GIWYC sections get thanked by loads of people on one post. If someone goes onto something like the benefits board and asks a specific question that one person answers, they are usually only thanked by the person who has been helped.
Does that mean that being the first to spot a bargain is more useful or more helpful than helping one person with a specific issue? I don't think so.
Yeh its easy to build massive thankyou counts, if you suck up to peoples !!!!!! all the time !0 -
The thanks button has it's uses (as I've mentioned above) but I think judging someone on their tally is weird and a good reason not to show the tally.
I do think funny posts etc do make a good contribution to the site BTW, but wouldn't like to think a 'funny' member that has a higher thanks count for being funny has more weight given to the advice they give than a more serious poster who has the same or less number of thanks but they had all been given for actually 'helpful' posts.I'm a little angelBUT A WHOLE LOTTA DEVIL

MSE has opened a thread for all the depressed folks who had spent countless hours building up their thanyou counts, as some recognition of achievement, unfortunateltly that has all now been wiped out ! So like the asylum seekers from civil wars they have to start from nothing !
:rotfl:
looks like you won that bid on ebay :whistle:0 -
Hi Trix,
I know what you are saying and just because some one has zero thanks does not mean they are a duff poster and just because someone has loads of thanks does not mean they are great.
.........But I did find it a useful measure of some ones contribution to the site.
Simarly I found how many posts made and time as a member useful.
Without this info you cannot distinguish between some one who joined 5 mins ago and is doing a wind up (e.g starts I feel depressesed thread) post from some one who has contributed a lot on this forum and needs a bit of help / boost and starts a thread (e.g I feel depressed)
The thanks button definitely helps you to positvely discriminate and promote useful posting.0 -
Trix wrote:I certainly wouldn't give more weight to someone because they have a higher thanks counter - as I've already said before, it is used for things such as 'that was funny' as well as lots of other reasons so maybe 'person A' is just funnier than 'person B' IYSWIM
A high thanks count doesnt make someone a nice person either, If I like what someone has said or they have made me laugh then I thank them, I certainly wouldnt take something as gospel just because they have a high count :T0 -
I'm wondering.....
Now that the thanks have been wiped, should I revert back to my original user id0 -

Good point - its often more effort put in etc to help the one person with a specific query than those thanking cos they've entered a comp or whatever.
Perhaps only have the tally on the person's profile - you'd have to actively look for it rather than it being on each post. At least then it wouldn't be so visible and so much a 'reputation' thing.
Or it could just be visible to the user themselves, on their profile or something, - as a matter of interest.
I wouldn't like to lost the "find all thanked posts by this user" link because I like to be able to quickly find which of my posts have ben thanked - because its interesting to know which advice/message has been appreciated and it often means that the thanking person has also replied to the thread and then I can go there to continue the conversation.
You're right about not judging people by their thanks count, now that I think about it. I am more likely to try to judge someone by their post count because often people who have been around a board for a while have plenty of experience and good advice to give. This is not always the case, obviously, before someone picks me up on that :rotfl:

Agreed guys that a high thanks count does not make it definite that person is a "good poster" e.g they mau have got all there thanks in one part of the board but make not so useful contributions in another part.
But look at it another way. If there was a "no thanks / this an unhelpful post / poster"
If some one had a count of 500 or 1000 posts from other members saying his posts were unhelpful.
I would take posts from that person with a pinch of salt / bit of sceptism.
Hey I guess I just like thanking and being thanked.0 -

so if a long term useful member wanted some help but a touch of anonymity when 'feeling depressed'...........not much point in them posting really
It shouldn't matter if they are new or old.....................useful or useless,if you can help in some way surely0
