tedsui, did you try saynoto0870 to try and bypass that number?

    Just a thought.

I agree with the webmail posts too, and personally use Fastmail, who provide an array of e-mail addresses, their free (guest) account suits me fine, but might be small for some.

And thanks MrsTine, you've eased my mind a bit. :)

Thanks pipk62 - you beat me to posting the first of those (been out all day shopping for baby stuff lol).

Quentin: personally I think it is a little rash yes... but after the Icesave incident I think Martin is right to advise extra caution. I'm not questioning people acting cautiously out there - just that assuming from what was released earlier this month that it was on the brink of "collapse" and so forth was sensationalised by the media and blown somewhat out of proportion. Yes shares in Italy stopped trading, but there is no internal indications that Tiscali is about to keel over.

Actually a lot of us were very disappointed about Tiscali failing to sell the UK arm to BskyB as we were hoping that as a result the employees might get free Sky packages ;)

  • A very rough outline is as follows:

Tiscali Italy borrowed money based on their predicted sale of the UK arm. When this fell through they had to alter their financing accordingly and indeed have done so with the banks. If you compare their EBITDA to other ISP's, Tiscali is a safe bet for banks to refinance given that it often makes a profit. You can research this yourselves should you wish to query it.

As for the service and other matters, well I'm not a customer so I can't add to this.

No, you can't leave them if you are still in contract, unless you pay up the remaining amount due on the contract. If Tiscali were to go under, they would be in breach by ceasing your service, so the contract would then be void. The odds are that some other company would come in and take over the service though, they have a large customer base so several companies would be chasing that business.
i've had the misfortune of being with this Firm since we had the PC about 4yrs ago  but have read so much stuff on the net its a terrible firm to be with, but cos my son and daughter use this for the assignments in school cant really afford for them to be with out the Darn Thing  but am going to bite the bullet and go with Sky,cos there's only Sky,Tiscali and not sure of the other i can get where i live.Sky is the cheapest, they have 24/7 Tech Teams that are based in the UK not India:mad: so I'm of the understanding i can just get my code and go elsewhere could this be true??????

You can get Sky ADSL almost anywhere, but can you get Sky on LLU, which is going to be cheaper? Check what LLU operators you have on your exchange on sam.knows.com. One of those will probably be the best option.
Yes, if you are out of contract you can just get your MAC and give it to your new provider. But bear in mind that if you have upgraded or changed your package/pricing in the last 12/18 months, then most likely you commenced a new contract then.

Well if you had a phone and bb bundle with Tiscali and you moved the phone, then I presume you started a new bb only contract with Tiscali. That's how it works. You need to check with them to be sure.
What speed does samknows say you can get at your location? If you are a long way out from the exchange or have wiring issues, moving your ADSL may not get you any more speed at all, because it will still be on the same local loop. So make sure it is not your internal wiring or bad fillters.
I suggest you retest your line speed using the BT test socket (behind the master socket faceplate). Plug your router into this and that will eliminate any problems on your internal wiring. The swap all filters in rotation with a known good one to see if any difference.

    just had a look and this is what they said;
Congratulations, you are in a broadband enabled area.
However, there is another service on your phone line (e.g. ADSL, LLU, DACS, etc) that would prevent you from ordering a new ADSL connection. this would be Tiscali i'd have thought?
The following services are available in your location:
    BT Wholesale ADSL
    BT Wholesale ADSL Max
    TalkTalk (CPW) LLU
Sky Broadband / Easynet LLU.Think i did something like this the other day when hunting for offers and i'm only about a mile from my exchange and the best i would get would be 5Mb which for what i use would be plenty enough.

Yes it knows you already have a broadband account. Your only LLU options are Sky or TalkTalk then. The speed estimator on samknows is based on theoretical (straight line) distance, but if you are only getting a fifth of the estimated speed then something is wrong.
Are you on the Tiscali 'up to 8MBps' max service, or is it an older limited service-some used to be capped at 1 or 2MBps?
If not I would first check your filters and do the master socket test, because otherwise you could move ISP and still have the same problem.
