Yes it knows you already have a broadband account. Your only LLU options are Sky or TalkTalk then. The speed estimator on samknows is based on theoretical (straight line) distance, but if you are only getting a fifth of the estimated speed then something is wrong.
Are you on the Tiscali 'up to 8MBps' max service, or is it an older limited service-some used to be capped at 1 or 2MBps?
If not I would first check your filters and do the master socket test, because otherwise you could move ISP and still have the same problem.
sorry dude should have said i was on the older service, sorry for being so dull:D as for the sockest and stuff i've checked the lot to see if i could squeeze any more life out of the darn thing all ready. But if i go to Sky are these wireless modems easy to set up:confused:

So are you saying you are currently on a Tiscali capped service?-if so, and it's 1MB, then you are already getting that speed (you said 942 kbps). So your options are to ask Tiscali to upgrade you to the unlimited service (which is £14.99, the same as you are paying now anyway). Or you go to Sky. Speed is likely to be just the same, as both are on a BT Wholesale Max service.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

yeah thats right, but for me to get the same with Tiscali it would cost me £10 with sky for the mid range which is 8Mb but if i can only recive 5 its not to bad.But on the + side i'll get to speak to someone who's English, cos the amount of time i have to waste repeating myself cos they cant understand a word i'm saying is anoying to say the least. The 942 drops to next to nothing around 4 luckt to get anywhere near 275/345 at that time:eek:

The speed dropping at 4pm is due to the contention ratio, everyone gets that unless they're on a cable service. Since you're starting from such a low1MBps cap then it is bound to be very slow. You'll still get a drop on a BT max service, but not as low as at present. 5MBps should be plenty fast enough for basic surfing, most people manage on up to 3MBps.

Tiscali's founder, Renato Soru, is now back on the members board at Tiscali - http://www.chooseisp.co.uk/broadband-guide/news/what-is-happening-tiscali.html

He's supposed to have some swing with the lending banks and is paramount for the banks agreeing to start re-structuring Tiscali's debts.

Not sure I'd be signing up anytime soon, but it at least looks promising when the 20% shareholder returns to sort things out.

I signed up to Tiscali recently - one of my worst ever technological mistakes!
Firstly, they don't support Apple Mac customers - which I didn't realise until after I signed up.
Next, I had chosen not to take one of their routers as I have a perfectly good one of my own. Big problem! They don't offer support to you if you don't take one of their routers.
So, they're taking my money but providing absolutely no support in return. To top it all, the connection seems much slower than my previous one with Virgin which was at a lower speed!
This is a mistake I will have to live with for the year the contract lasts...unless the company collapses first!

Yeah! Cross your fingers and hope O2 buy them! Although, not sure how that works if they buy the infrastructure too, might make you stay put.

Does anyone have any further info on what is happening with Tiscali? I am with them and have been for about 3 years now, very happy with the service and speed etc BUT I have some important jobs coming up soon that I must have an internet connection for.
    Any news?

I don't think much more is out yet apart from Soru re-joining the board.

He's come back to try and protect his 20% stake, and has some clout with the creditors - so it's a lot more promising they will sort their debts out with the banks to a repayment that is affordable.

I think the biggest downside is just that they don't have any money to invest in service improvements, so they might not be able to keep up with the competition - and as more customers leave, their financial position will get worse.

You could always safe bet yourself with a Pay As You Go mobile broadband dongle.
