Tiscali themselves offer a PAYG dial up service, just Google it. It's probably faster than their broadband service...
Having said that, it's a bit unfair that Tiscali is getting all the flak for the major outage at the weekend. This was a fault in the BT network and affected many non-LLU users, myself included, not just Tiscali.
I thought it was strange when IE went onto a BT wholesale page, I thought !!!!!!'s this all about, haven't heard a thing back from tiscali support no mention of a refund or anything knocked off, they are sh-it, I wish I hadn't gone with them, cannot wait until I can go else where.

Just a thought on sunday night when mine came back on at 11pm I left the wireless router on, internet been fine since, a tad slow, but at least its been on.
    so leave your modems/routers on.

also when I rang them on saturday evening, and asked about them going bust, the guy said "we are sick of people saying this, so if you could please inform me of there correct name and postal address, so that I can let out legal team know, and we can take this person or persons to court over it" end of I shut up.

    Plans for 2009

This is a long thread and I haven't read it all so if this has been said, sorry.
If you leave Tiscali check your bank statements carefully for the next few months.
    They will keep taking payment.

I had a month's free trial, and they asked for a CC no. which I stupidly gave them. I cancelled before the month was up. Six months later I discovered that they had taken six months fees.
Partly my fault, I should have noticed sooner.
Thankfully the CC company refunded - eventually.

I have read of others with a similar experience on other forums.

Yup - a third party contractor damaged the BT cables - there was nothing that either BT or Tiscali could have done to prevent or speed up the service being resumed. No matter who you were with you'd probably have lost service I'm afraid :)

That's probably because Tiscali ISN'T going bust and it's very fustrating to run your head against that question on a daily basis when it's based on rumours :)

There WAS a huge outage in London, but there was nothing Tiscali or even BT could do about that...

It COULD have a knock on effect as a lot of the servers are based in the London area and if the servers can't communicate then you can't connect. Doesn't matter where you are in the country if the server that can't connect is the one serving your area sadly...

As for speeds dropping due to the holidays - check if you are on LLU or Datastream... sounds like you are on datastream to me in which case then yes it's likely to drop with the tonnes of kids home on holiday when the contention rate goes through the roof! Chance is it will be the same problem with other providers in your area unfortunately - no ISP will pay to upgrade the exchange unless they think they can make their money back. Upgrading an exchange to LLU costs many thousands of pounds - the profit margin from each home user is probably about a couple of quid... so unless they think they will get enough users on that exchange to warrent upgrading it then it won't happen sadly... Especially in the current economic climate. No ISPs are as far as I am aware starting new investment programs although existing programs are continuing as they have already been budgeted and started etc :)

No LLU in our exchange  http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange/WNKER

It was a bit better last night, but not much - could just about download my emails, but couldn't get into any websites - including my own!

This didn't happen at Christmas, so why now??

Probably because there are more Tisclai users on the exchange now than there was then... OR someone is using a lot more bandwidth causing you to struggle :)
Depending on the capacity it doesn't have to take much sadly.
I would start by contacting tech support with as much info as you have and explaining that this drop in service is unacceptable. They will then be able to monitor it.
As it's the consumer end I don't know what the procedures are for fixes etc (I work/worked on the commercial side - different procedures and processes...) but try using the magic words "Due to the increased load pressure on the exhange I would like to know the time scale for a VP upgrade to take place" - VP upgrades aren't cheap but if your service has dropped that much I would say it's warrented... It may be that someone is actually abusing the download system and is taking all the available download bandwidth - they will only be alerted to that when people moan sadly so suggesting VP upgrades should make them take a peek ;)

Do be warned that if a VP upgrade IS decided then it can take I think up to 10 days - that's due to BT, not Tiscali :(

So far, so good this evening - fingers crossed.

Thanks for your advice, Mrs. Tine. Have noted and will see what the situation is when we get back on Monday. Have been keeping a diary of downtime, so forewarned is forearmed :)

I have been with Tiscali since they were called screaming.net (yes, I know, misplaced loyalty). Recently there have been problems with the screaming.net domain - I've contacted the domain name registry, and since they haven't received any renewal fees from Tiscali, they've suspended the registration. Could it be that Tiscali's financial problems mean they can't afford to renew?
