Grrrrrrrrr  Broadband still dropping out of an evening - last night it cut out at 7.50pm and no sign of it returning by 10.30pm - so gave up and went to bed.
It works perfectly ALL day from around 6.30am.
We're all getting rather frustrated by this, particularly my son who works until late most evenings and can't even read his emails or check his banking because of this nonsense.
So, plucking up courage to phone Tech support .....................0 -
Are you using a router or USB modem.
Routers tend to 'pull' the signal to you, increase line problems, leading to non-connection (flashing lights on the router). USB Modems are passive, and sit there waiting for the signal to arrive, removing this problem.
What a load of old rubbish!
The problem is Tiscali, the most consistently companied about ISP for years!

Using a router.
As I've said before, this problem only surfaced 3 weeks ago when the schools broke up for Easter. Been with Tiscali Broadband since Oct 05 and no major problems with it at all - until now
The techies on the Tiscali broadband forums also looking at this, and it does seem quite a common problem at the moment judging by other posts on there.0 -
You shouldn't shout rubbish when you seem to just spout it half the time. Understand the difference between passive and active.
I fully understand the difference between passive and active which you obviously do not and I also know that only idiots put up with Tiscali.

Having had a very similar experience to "Mayday" with Tiscali, and now having very much better reliability, I strongly suggest you take on board what "dontdoit" has said.
Your problem may be due to many reasons, but the telephone line has to be able to meet the criteria to support the speed. If not you will get disconnections. Get this checked by either reading the information yourself in your router/modem, or get Tiscali to do a line test. BT Openreach confirmed for us that our line was at the edge of supporting a speed. Removing telephone extension sockets and other devices improved it slightly, but in the evenings with more overall line activity, it would intermittently disconnect. They moved the speed to the next level down and it is much improved.
Some routers are better than others at working on the edge of the limits, but it really is very basic stuff for the Openreach guys to advise you about.
If they say your line is perfectly ok, then maybe Tiscali has a problem in your exchange.0 -
Results! Via Tiscali Broadband Support Forum, we are being sent a USB Modem & RJ11 cable to retest everything.
PLUS, my son tried switching off the modem & PC for a few minutes and & rebooting - Eureka, it worked - back to normal speeds - for now.0 -
Talk Talk are offering Tiscali customers a £50 credit on their bill if they move to them. Available through their website. Don't know why it only applies to Tiscali customers!0

Now it's not quite rubbish. ADSL lines are more prone to lose synchronisation in the evening / small hours due to temperature drop causing higher line resistance. This usually shouldn't be a problem unless there is a line fault, which can be internal to the home or external on BT's side. There are checks that can be done in the home that are realtively easy that can establish where the problem is and in 90% of cases I have been called in to investigate it's usually inside the house where the problem is.
I will not go further on this because it can get quite complex and I feel an antagonistic attitude from yourself.
I simply felt your sweeping statement about Tiscali is a little unfair as after all they have never even worked on the phone line or came into the home to set up the adsl equipment..

I just posted this thread then read yours:
Hi All,
Last week I was waiting for a call back from TalkTalk and about to sign up to "myTalkTalk" phone and BB for £6.49 pre month + £11.25 line rental.
Today TalkTalk offered me (and I took) a package, exclusively for Tiscali customers, as follows:
£50 credit on first bill
£29.99 connection fee waived
£6.49 off for 3 months (= £19.47) leaving only the £11.25 line rental to be paid,
then £17.74 per month for the remaining 15 months of the 18 month contract. This package includes free E/W calls, free local calls from 1st May & free 0845/0870 call from 2nd June too! I realise all that glitters is not gold, but TalkTalk seem to be as good as most suppliers and with Tiscali going under the choice is limited.
This must be the best offer on the market at present I think.
