Get a GMail account today and you won't ever have to change it again. regardless of what ISP you use. All the online services just need you to log in and change your contact details, you only have to do it once.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

You seem very defensive of them. (In what way do you consider them "on of the top 5"? Their unhappy customers who come to MSE and all over the net to report problems might say different)

But as I said, my suggestion was as a precaution. Storing important emails is always a worthwhile precaution whether or not the ISP is in difficulties.

Top 5 based on their customer base size which is all that matters in BB business these days I'm afraid :) And I'm not defensive - just get bored with people making uninformed statements - as I work for them (and have happily admitted to doing so on here several times if you take the time to look :) ) then I am in a position to give a more realistic view of what is actually happening - and no I don't work in customer service or home user areas. No my job isn't going to be on the line if customers leave in their droves and actually I would be better off if they DID make me redundant and no I have no loyalty towards them thanks to an ongoing battle I have with them on a personal level (in case you cared) - however scaremongering and giving the wrong information etc is just going to worry people needlessly which is why i have replied :)

Can you PM me the email address you've used or post it here? All I can see is a phone number for MAC requests and I'd rather not phone them if I can avoid it. Cheers.

You might find this page helpful :) and it does explain cases in which it's not possible to provide a MAC code http://www.pipex.co.uk/residential/legal/moving-broadband-provider.php
That doesn't mean you can't move providers btw - all it means is that you are likely to get interupted service whilst you change providers :) Nothing more.

I'm not sure that Pipex (or any ISP) will provide a MAC code based on a mail - usually you have to verify your identity before a MAC code is generated and that is usually done over the phone - you can request one by mail too because the MAC would be sent to the postal address that your phone number is registered to :)

Personally if you don't like phoning them then just contact your new provider and ask them to start moving your service - just be prepared for a gap in the service with them :)

Totally agree (although I prefer hotmail :) ) - I NEVER use ISP mail addresses for important mail or subscriptions - I'm a bit "special" in that I own some domains which I will always own and I use the mail addresses associated to those for my important mail (ie banks etc) and nothing else.

I see you are a board guide. That doesn't mean you can be rude.

Why should I or anyone else be expected to read all your posts to discover you have an interest when the site rules say posters should always declare any interests.

Aside from this, you suggest I made an "uninformed statement", and was "scaremongering". Not so. As posted, all I did was post a suggested precaution.

(One which you apparently agree with according to your comments on being a "special" person who goes to great lengths to safeguard your emails independently of your ISP!)

And your comments about longing to get made redundant from Tiscali is hardly designed to encourage us to not worry about getting MACs and preserving our e-mails!

According to the below quote, Pipex do give out MAC codes via email. It might take a little longer than on the phone, but it doesn't appear to bean impossible task.

    Hi
Having read the postings since the beginning of the week about Tiscali doing down the pan, I decided to contact Pipex (who I've been with for 2 weeks short of a year) and ask them for my MAC code. I received a response at 6.00 am this morning that requested further details from me, which I have given them, and the last contact from them, about an hour ago, was that they will email my code within 48 hours and hard copy it in the post to me within 5 days. Well, I live in hope, because I really want to leave them, they have given me a shoddy service and I am looking forward to returning to BT. Not perhaps a wonderful service, but a reliable one.

Firstly I don't think my replies were rude - however if you think they were then I profusely appologise - secondly I'd be happy being made redundant because I would be better of financially and because I have a baby due in 9 weeks and my job is hughly stressful and I'd be far happier not returning to it after my maternity leave but instead having everything paid for (at a far higher rate than SMP) for over a year :)

I have ALWAYS safeguarded my mails regardless of what ISP I have been with - since the day I first had internet many many moons ago. Long before I did this job I worked for an Anti Virus company and before that for HP in the data storage division as an engineer - I am borderline paranoid about security on my systems and backing up data... this has nothing to do with what ISP you choose to go with - I'd recommend EVERYONE does it. And if the mails are important then make sure you make a hard copy on CD/DVD/memory stick and keep it seperately (no I don't suggest you get as sad as me and have external hard drives on rotation for back up for your whole system... I appreciate I'm a geek and that's just how I am).

I also didn't say YOU were scaremongering - some of the posts on this thread and the other current Tiscali thread are in my view (and it is as always only my view - same as all my posts are) scaremongering and mostly uninformed... I didn't say YOUR posts were :) If that was the impression I gave then as I said earlier - I appologise :)

It may be that they will once they have recieved the relevant answers to their security questions - I know they certainly didn't used to (and when I left madasafish and before them Talktalk they definitely refused to issue them based on my e-mail requests :) )
If you want to try though I would suggest using their provisioning e-mail address - this is the department that will need to action the request (basically provisioning deal with not only new connections but also people leaving who want MACs and who have ceased lines etc).
I can try and dig out the best address tomorrow for you if you like and no-one else has replied with one :) However tonight is Sunday and I refuse to log on to work even for fellow MSE'ers ;) I love you all but there ARE limits ;)

What about this one, then - scaremongering, uninformed or good independent advice?

    Hi CampFreddy
Sorry BB has been down over the weekend (nothing unusual there then!). In response to your question the e-mail a/d for Pipex is:-
    customerservices@pipex.net
I found this under the "contact us" section on Pipex site, and as I object to using any 087 prefix phone numbers, decided to do it this way to request my MAC code, because at least I know they can't keep me hanging on the phone forever while they p--y with themselves!
I am still waiting for my code but will advise, one and all, when it arrives.
