Fixed savings or investing?
Hi guys, I have about £14,000 that is about to mature in a fixed savings account. I’m looking to maximise its return and I don’t need access to it - this is purely long term savings. What’s better? Put it in fixed savings accounts (at around 6% guaranteed return), or invest? I’m a higher risk investor and I have a long…

Mortgage Overpayment - suggest something better
We're currently on a 5 year, fixed rate mortgage, £75k and 3.5 years to go at 1.89%. We're overpaying a carefully measured £800/mo, to target clearing the balance very shortly after the fixed period (and its associated penalties) end. I can't help thinking, however, that I could do better with my £800 than this. The end…

Saving Advice
Bit of background. I have recently sold my flat as the service charge was getting absolutely ridiculous. Because interest rates are still a bit volatile I've moved in with family. The upshot is I have £85,000 to save for one year and I'm not sure where to save it. ISAs have a deposit limit of £20,000 so I'm not sure if I…

Paying Tax when over the Personal Saving Allowance
Hi we are in the fortunate position of being able to put enough money into savings that it will take both my wife and I over our personal saving allowance. We both have maxed out ISA’s and have savings accounts set up with NS and I, and various banks and building societies. As we will go over the PSA can I ask are we…

"Equalisation payments" for Accumulation funds
Hi, I'm struggling to understand "equalisation payments" as applied to Accumulation funds. If you pay say £1000 for a holding, and no payments are made back to you, what is the logic in treating the cost of that holding as say £990 as a result? In the real world if that holding is now worth £1050 then you've made a gain of…

NS&I Guaranteed Growth Bond Cancellation
How long do NS&I take to repay funds if bonds are cancelled within 30 days? I understand that they pay interest but I couldn’t see the timings anywhere. I have taken a punt and bought some on the basis that a probate house sale will top up my readily accessible cash savings soon but the sale looks a bit dodgy currently.…

Is it worth getting a Financial Advisor
Hi, I am generally reasonable with money matters but I have been looking at my portfolio including my investments, pensions etc and I am not sure I am maximising and managing them well enough. I also want to get my kids off to a good start and I am just feeling stuck overall. Is a financial advisor a good option? **Updated…

Chase Account Statements - PDF only
I have a Chase Account and I am very happy with it but there are two negatives. Firstly, the App doesn't work on my current phone (Motorola G7) but it does work on my iPad. Secondly the only format offered for statements is PDF. I track my monthly expenditure and manage my budget using an Excel Spreadsheet into which I can…

A 'complete' list of available savings rates?
A while ago, maybe a year or so ago (I can't remember) someone on here put up a link to a website that had a really good list of lots & lots of accounts with their interest rates. It was IMO better than what's on the front page of MSE savings. I thought I'd bookmarked it but nope & I also can't find it. I'm hoping from my…

FSCS protection and funds
Hi guys Regards FSCS protection, I think Im right that it only covers funds (non-ETFs) which are UK domiciled. So my VFEM - for example - which is an ETF and Ireland domiciled wont be covered, but my VVLSRU would be. One of my funds is VIGBBD with an ISIN of IE00B50W2R13 . Where is this domiciled? Is it covered? Thanks

Do I have to declare interest to HMRC....
I'm a 40% tax payer, and although I'm not sure exactly how much interest I earned from savings, it would have been more than my £500 tax free allowance. It won't be anywhere near £10,000. However, I've not heard anything from HMRC about them amending my tax code to recover the tax on the interest over £500 (like I have in…

Raisin Withdrawals
Hello there. I have a notice account expiring on 19/08/22. How are peoples experiences with the withdrawal back to Raisin? I’ve read 3 working days max quoted. Investec to Meteor up to one day & another to Raisin? I may reinvest. If not - how quick does it tend to take from Raisin to current account? I’ve seen some old…

Joint savings account for USA and uk citizens
Hi. My partner and I want to open a joint savings account with instant access in the UK. My partner is a US citizen who lives in the US but we travel back and forth regularly as he works there and I work here in Scotland. We tried at my bank where I’ve held accounts for 25+ years but they told me because of law he can’t…

One off pension withdrawal
Hi, I don’t plan to draw my main pension yet and am still working , but recently found out I’ve £30k in a separate pension. I wouldn’t mind taking £7.5k tax free amount. Can this be done easily ? Is the onus on me to keep track of pension withdrawals?, and any tax free amounts I might take ? Any thoughts appreciated.
