Advice please daughter's puppies
Hi My daughter is a single mum with two sons aged 7 and 11. She works full time shift work so I do a lot of childcare at her house. The boys have always longed for a dog and the plan was that when I retired (early 2021) I would get a puppy which would be their dog but lived with me as I would be there for it 24/7. I'm…

Don’t know what to say
Hi everybody. I live in an over 60s development, about 30 of us. One of the occupants had to have her dog put down. It was fairly sudden and he was 12. I’m a cat person and 12 isn’t old for a cat but I’m not sure about dogs. The dog was lovely, very friendly, gentle and didn’t bark very often. Everybody in the court loved…

Getting the Cat into the Cat Carrier
My cat needs to go to the vet for her yearly healthcheck and vaccinations. I am going to make an appointment for her on Thursday. However, the last time we tried to take her she turned into a complete wildcat. We used plug in Feliway and the cat carrier was sitting in the kitchen for a week for her to get used to it but as…

Is £700 per night normal for Vet’s bill?
My partner’s dog is 15yo now and has a lot of health problems, including suspected Cushing’s syndrome, arthritis, stomach and thyroid problems. She’s also had urinary incontinence for years. It has cost a lot of money investigating and treating these issues (latest bill was £650 two weeks ago). On Saturday evening, she had…

Indestructible chewy toy recommendations please
Morning all I've recently acquired a lovely 2 yr old little dog and we're getting along famously with training and so on. However he demolishes (and then swallows the bits) of every toy I buy him. We can still use the toys, even when they've got holes in them, for throwing in the garden etc but when I want him to go on his…

Dog bit postman through letterbox
Hi all, I have a German shepherd dog and have had him for 6 and a half years. Today whilst delivering the post, a new postman put the letters through the letterbox and my dog bit his finger. I expect he was trying to grab the post which he does all the time. This has never happened before and the postman's fingers would…

Dog with allergies
My boy, an almost two year old mini dachshund, has just been diagnosed with multiple allergies. After several months of skin problems with limited response to multiple treatments (antibiotics, steroids, apoquel, betafuse gel) our vet recommended several tests, including sensitest allergy test, to establish the cause of his…

Planning to welcome a Kitten into our Family
After several years of my daughter asking for a cat, we have decided to welcome one into our family in the near future. We had cats in my family growing up, but things seem to have changed a lot since then! There was no pet insurance, scratch posts or fluffy beds! Well at least not in our house, it was cardboard boxes,…

Can you recommend a retractable lead.
I've gone through more retractable leads than I care to think about. Wife bought yet another from a German supermarket last week, yesterday on the third outing the lead failed - pulled the lead out of the handle. Anyone recommend a descent. Before anyone suggests training the dog not to pull, he is very strong willed and a…

Pet insurance - pre-existing conditions
I have a question about pre-existing medical conditions in relation to pet insurance. We have a two years old German Shepherd who has had a couple of stomach problems. After the first (campylobacter, probably from something he ate) the insurers said they would not cover any future gastro issues. The second time the vet…

Insurance for Pet Sitters
:hello: This summer I looked after various pets for various friends and relatives, either at their house or at mine. On the event this will become a regular occurrence (but not as a business), I was wondering if there is some kind of insurance I can/should get. Or would I be covered under the owner's pet insurance? TIA ;)

Puppy Training Support
I have a 4 month old Terrier cross Cavapoo. I am feeling really alone in her training and struggling. I was hoping to share my struggles online here and get some advice from the community. :) I live alone in a very small 2 bed townhouse. It is over 3 floors, with one room on each level. My pup is called Nula. When I first…

Insurance for Guinea Pigs?
Do you need insurance for guinea pigs? My husband grew up with guinea pigs and he's certain that they would never have been insured. I know Rabbits need insurance, vaccinations etc but it appears that you don't necessarily NEED it for them, but should you have it? I've priced up one policy online and it says it's going to…

Bitten by dog - need advice please!
Hello, I've been dog walking/boarding for about 7 years now. Over these years I've looked after dogs (and other animals) of all breeds and sizes and never had any problems whatsoever. As a massive animal lover this started off as a bit of a hobby for me, and developed into my full-time job. It's something I've always loved…

Dog likes to attack me, what to do?
Dear fellow MSE members, Dog likes to bark at me and some even try to attack me. This happens always, and they are stranger dogs, never see them before. It had been several incidents when I nearly attacked by dogs during walking. Everytime if I see untied dogs coming from opposite direction of the path, I will stop and…
