Puppy / Smell

Options
Hello all,

We have recently got a puppy. He is great, very well behaved and we have enjoyed welcoming him into our family. He is a collie (not really long hair but definitely not short).

We have a large rug in the living room which he likes to sleep and rest on as hes not allowed on the furniture. The rug is on a laminate floor but is tucked under our furniture as it is very large, the pile on the rug is also very long.

We vacuum the rug a lot and clean mop the laminate however the smell does just not go away, we have tried treating the rug with a few different cleaners / shampoos and still can't get rid of the dog smell. I think we may need to get rid of the rug altogether but first, I just wondered if anyone has any advice on removing the smell? It probably doesn't help that it's winter and we don't have the doors and windows open much....

I am thinking of getting an air purifier this weekend but that still doesn't solve the problem of the rug itself.

Thanks

Collies aren't noticeably smelly dogs, puppies usually even less so. But he may have residual smell from the breeder's, especially if they had multiple dogs. He may need a bath to get rid of that smell, it certainly helps to get puppies used to a bath while they're still small enough to be easily handled! Use a proper puppy/dog shampoo as many human ones have lots of perfumes and chemicals that can be drying for a puppy's skin.Check his ears to make sure they are clean and pink - infected or dirty ears are incredibly smelly and may need cleaning and/or a visit to the vets.

Wash his bed and bedding in biological detergent as that will probably be smelly as well.

The rug can THEN be cleaned with proprietary odour removing cleaners - again, make sure they are pet-friendly. Simple Solutions Pet Stain and Odour cleaner is very good and has enzymes that kill off the smell of "accidents" too - is it possible he has wee'd on the carpet in the past?

Review his diet - some dog foods can make dogs smell "yeasty".
