Retro/vintage furnishings
Anyone here buy old but not antique furnishings for restoration? I bought an old Ercol Plank dining table probably over 50 years old, English elm top, beech frame, £150 on ebay, stripped back to bare wood, light stain on top, 3 coats Danish Oil, then waxed. It looks like new. Actually it is better than new, because new…

Pineapple Vinegar
Has anyone made this from pineapple scraps please? I think making it is straightforward, am just wondering how you would use the vinegar. I have never had anything made with it so don't have the palette to imagine where it might go best. Either that or I will dehydrate the core for general fruit powder. Any advice from all…

I need it to rain.....
I can't believe I'm saying this but I've just soaped up the patio and scrubbed it whilst it was raining....and the sun has now come out. Ugggh. I need just another short downpour to help rinse it away. Trust me, I'm not being lazy. I have a huge patio and I'm worn out and sweaty after having just scrubbed 25ft of patio. Is…

Party desserts
Every year we have a couple of big 'at home' days and I like to provide a selection of desserts that look good, are easy to serve and that I can make in advance and freeze. I'm in a bit of a rut now and would like to widen my repertoire as I keep making the same recipes. Any ideas and recommendations please? Which desserts…

Gammon joint - is it cooked?
Hopefully you guys know a little bit more about slow cookers than I do! I've cooked a 1.2kg gammon joint in my MR 6.5L slow cooker for a little over 9 hours. Thinking it was ready I took it out and start shredding through the meat with a fork, then I noticed that it's not the usual cooked pork colour. Parts of it are…

One mans junk is another's treasure. What to donate?
We are going through the veeeeery long process of decluttering. I have a bag for charity shop donations but am never sure whether to donate something or not. How do you decide on what's rubbish and what's for the charity shop? I don't mean things like broken toys or jigsaws with half the pieces missing. I binned all 10…

How long can you keep beans, lentils and rice for?
I am cleaning out my cupboards and I have found some beans, lentils and rice that are well out of date (I put them back in last time I cleaned out the cupboard because I felt so bad about not having used them!). The truth is that now that our situation has changed; my OH was made redundant 10 months ago, we need to utilize…

Recycling waste water
Rather than pour dishwater down the plug hole I was wondering if there was a way I could purify it so it was drinkable again. Could be quite a saving.

Cheap and easy dinners for the warmer weather
now that the weather is turning warmer I am looking for ideas for quick, cheap dinners that can be cooked on the cooker top hob so I don't have to put the oven on which is an old gas oven so not very quick to cook with and also makes the house too warm. Things I don't mind cooking are Spag. Bol, chops with salad, past and…
