Awful weather - typical Brits talk
Well it's been downright awful here in Somerset for the last couple of days with non-stop rain! Just wondering how committed you lovely peeps are... have you been put off by gardening when it's raining? Are you a shrinking violet or a hardy perennial? Just a light hearted thread ☔🌧️

Palm trees in pots
Hi ive 3 palm tress in half beer barrels they are about 6 ft high. The soil within the pots is rock solid. I’ve bought some bags of multi purpose compost to top them up with but I’m just wondering if I need to be addressing the soil that’s already in the pots. Don’t think it’s been touched other than weeded since I planted…

My lawn is a mess
Hello everyone, I had a new lawn laid a couple of years ago, and it's not been very good. There are a lot of bare patches and mouldy bits, and some weeds are growing on it. I have some autumn moss weed killer and fertiliser. Do you think it would be okay to put it on the lawn now, in March? Do you have any other…

Help with the front lawn
I moved in here two years ago and clearly the lawn had just been cut endlessly in summer and nothing else ever done with it, so it was sparse, yellow and full of moss and weeds I have fed the grass regularly and scarified it half to death in autumn. Moss is gone but the weeds are proliferating and now it's about 50:50…

Preserving stuff - 1. Basil
I'd love to be able to have this flavour to hand during the winter but know that drying a thin leaved plant (I've tried Mint before) is a hit and miss process and I don't have that much Basil to practise with. I was considering some sort of Basil oil but not convinced by the internet ideas. But would it be better to smoosh…

Can a fir or other evergreen be grafted to a willow to give super growth rate?
When I am walking in the forestry I love the feeling going deep under the canopy of those huge fir (I think that is what they are?) trees gently swaying in the wind. Where the light is blocked out and you are walking on soil that feels soft as clouds. To grow a forest like that I guess would take decades and I would be…

Removal of two large branches of a mature Siver Birch overhanging neighbours garden
We have a large mature Silver Birch in our back garden at least 12 metres high and 12 metres from our terraced house. It is 4 metres from our boundary with our next door neighbour. Two large branches overhang our neighbours garden ending about 2 metres on their side of the boundary fence at a height of about 10 metres. My…

GreenFly - A 'flylady style' gardening thread with weekly tasks to tame your garden
What do we mean by GreenFly? Over on old style there is a long running and supportive community who focus on getting the house clean and tidy in smaller steps. A group of us thought that something similar for taming the garden would be very useful so here it is. The idea is that by doing little and often we can get on top…

Growing horseradish in a pot
I'm keen on making fire cider so have been looking for horseradish. I finally found some organic roots in a veg shop. I think I can plant some in a bigish pot with decent compost but since I failed miserably to grow on ginger root I'd be grateful for any tips

Are garden waste terms and conditions a consumer contact?
Just looking at the renewal of my garden waste collection and a few of the terms seem a bit questionable. Obviously on some level my decision or otherwise to renew is whether I agree or don't to be subject to them, but some of them go so far as for me to start to question whether they represent unfair terms in consumer…

Algae stain on wooden swing seat
Hi I used to use Cuprinol to preserve exterior wood. Is there a preservative I can apply to the swing seat that will kill the algae or do I need to lightly sand the green algal stain off before treating?

UPVC summer house
I am moving to a UPVC summer house it has power tv and fridge. Do they stay dry? I was considering blinds and maybe wooden laminate floor? Do they get much condensation? I wouldn’t want to do it and everything is damp. I am guessing they keep the tv out there all year. I’ve never had a summer house before so wondering what…

Middle of the lawn rule for trees?
We have a very open front lawn which i would love to make a bit more disguised with a tree in the middle however when i look this up online the message seems to be don't plant a tree in the centre of the lawn. I feel it will look odd if planted to one side! Is it okay to plant in the middle, i'm planning to keep it under…

Tree

Growing strawberry plants in pots with holes in
I wonder what the experience is - if any. We have some nice tubby pots on offer here and with my tiny garden it's a way of growing something up and leaving a bit more soil free. Also maybe, away from the chugiepegs and slugs. Of course there is the awful compost problem but first things first. Any thoughts would be welcome.

Hunt for old / missing daffs
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c0qwvppk0zzo Who knows what's out there in old gardens. Could be interesting. My garden only has some planted by me.

Is my Yucca beyond hope?
Hi - we have bought a Yucca back in November, and I think it is pretty much dead. It's our first indoor plant, so we have no idea if it is bad luck or if we have done something wrong. We haven't over watered it.....in fact we have only watered it once shortly after we bought it, as we have read that it needs very little…

queries about growing garlic....
OK so 2 different questions... A few years back I had an elephant garlic bulb which started to go all sprouty so rather than bin it I broke the cloves apart and planted them in the border. Every year since I have had 1 ridiculously tall plant that has come up with a purple/blue flower about 6 feet up. Sometimes the flower…
