Hi
I used to use Cuprinol to preserve exterior wood. Is there a preservative I can apply to the swing seat that will kill the algae or do I need to lightly sand the green algal stain off before treating?

Wash (I use either an old sponge scourer or a dish washing brush and rinse) and a light sanding should do it.I've even got the green stuff on fences that were painted with Ducks Back. It's everywhere this year because it's been so wet and cloudy.I haven't found anything to stop it.But I can advise not to use the waterbased varnish that seemed so easy, I had serious algal issues under that and it was diabolical to get the varnish off.
I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!

I've since found that white vinegar diluted 1:4 kills green algae, although it takes a few days before you can see the difference.1
