Soil prep before turf
Is there an easier way of preparing soil for laying turf other than "heeling" it? I did this year's ago and it took absolutely ages and was really hard on the legs.

New hanging basket advice please
I've bought a new hanging basket diameter 14ins and depth 9ins, made of white plastic basket-weave. It's lined with a sheet of polythene which is secured around the rim. Should I make holes or slits in the polythene? If so, it's tempting to make the holes/slits a couple of inches up from the bottom of the basket as a small…

Weed Killer
This is something i have used myself and had excellent results. For the use on paths, patios, round the edges of the house - you know them that grow practically up the wall of the house awkward to get at places. The other thing about using this it also cleans the flags where the birds poop too. Just use Jeyes fluid and water…

ID Plant: single-stem red-edged toothed leaf pairs
Hi, I was hoping for a 'twenty questions' plant identifier site on the web, but found nothing. Here's a picture of a plant that's now over waist high in its second year. I've been hanging on for it to flower to aid identification, but it just keeps growing. It's not successfully spreading through seed, and there's no…

Grey water recycling for the garden during the heatwave
I realise this is pretty basic but thought I would share our experience with reusing greywater. So this spring we redesigned our garden putting in raised beds for fruit and vegetables and digging up the lawn for flowerbeds. We had quite a lot of rain in the spring so it all looked good. Then come June and July no rain at…

accidental melon seedlings
Hi all. I threw a whole load of melon seeds on the compost a few weeks ago and now have about 25 seedlings just popped up. Is there any point me thinning and growing them on? My hunch is we are way too late in the year for these to do anything, but it seems a shame to waste them :)

What's eating my beetroot leaves.
Both me and my neighbour after years of success have over the last few years been unable to grow beetroot. Dunno why. This year my beetroot have come up to one inch to two inch high. But all the leaves then get eaten, not the central vein just the juicy leaves. It's not slugs as I use the pellets and this year have not had…

Two Spot Spider Mites
I'm new to them and have lost a number of plants and nearly lost more because they are more or less invisable to the naked eye (unless they are making noticeable webs) and to me give identical symptoms to drought (under watering) and or surprisingly drowning (over watering). I think it was the continual hot weather that…

Help! Mushrooms growing in indoor plants!
I've just been doing the rounds of watering my indoor plants and discovered some tiny mushrooms growing in one of the pots. Never seen this before and have been growing indoor plants and gardening for more years than I care to remember. The pot (a large one) contains two Peace Lily plants, both of which I've had for ages.…

Is anyone lifting parsnips yet?
This week I started lifting the bottles that I grow my parsnips in, the first parsnip weighed 6oz, the next three were 10oz each. I reckon I could be in for a bumper crop this summer, I have about 100 bottles in the ground.

Veg plants
I picked up a savoy cabbage plant and a broad bean plant for 50p each yesterday – they’re not dead but not looking in too brilliant a condition but thought I would give it a go! Being relatively new to this veg growing, do you think they will survive and be prosperous? Also can I put them in my veg patch which previously…

Buying a greenhouse
Apologies if this topic has been covered hundreds of times before but I'm looking for some advice on buying a greenhouse please. We moved in to our house in September, we were pretty economical in buying furniture and furnishings and the house needed little in the way of redecoration. At the start of sumer we started work…

Butternut squash
Self seeded from compost. Profuse foliage which has climbed over the small kitchen garden wall, and is advancing towards the lawn. There appear to be a number of potential fruits, small corgette sized at the mo'. Could I ask, should I cut back extensively, and accept perhaps one or two squashes would be a freebie bonus? I…

Blight Watch web site
This free web tool may of use/interest to anybody who grows tomatoes or potatoes. I don't know how accurate it is. It seems to base its results on temperature/humidity. You just enter your postcode and it predicts the likelihood of blight spores thriving in your area. In my case, the result was accurate (No blight)…

toxicblue green algae
Hello all, I usually hang out on the Old Style board, but have a specific question. I have a brook at the bottom of my garden, and lower buckets into it to water my deep bed (vegetables, salad stuff etc). This year, fo the first time in memory, there is a toxic algae warning on the water in the brook. Does anyone know if I…
