Camellia container size?
Hello, I'd like to grow a Camellia × williamsii 'E.G. Waterhouse', which the RHS site recommends growing in a container if your soil is not acidic enough. Would anyone be kind enough to suggest a container size please? Also, if there is a site which will tell me this for future purchases, please let me know, as I only have…

Best garden for a rental property - stones, paving, grass?
Hi, Currently the garden is in a bit of a bad state and full of weeds and very old/dirty stones. Having the entire thing paved over seems like the best in terms of being low maintenance, but the garden is fairly large and I'm worried it'd look ugly. Laying down turf is tempting, and would be the cheapest option, but if the…

Flower ID
Came across this flower on my travels today - it looks like a type of sunflower though it's not as tall as the usual ones. The flower appears from a 'cocoon' of fuzzy stuff like a cocoa bean, and the fuzzy stuff then folds back down underneath the flower - see bottom left flower. Anyone out there know what this is please?

removing lower branches of tree
We have a roughly 10m tall Robinia tree which is getting a bit out of hand and I want to remove some lower branches - crown lifting is the technical term I believe. Is it OK to do this now or should I wait til winter? There are 3 fairly obvious branches I could take out. Is there anything particular I need to be careful of…

Moving a field maple
I’ve got an old Belfast sink full of Chinese lanterns, which have grown well in there for over 15 years. Noticed today that a 25cm field maple has sneaked in! When is the best time to transplant it? N.B no field maples around here but I’ve had other strange trees appear in the garden, from Schumach (spelling?) to holly,…

gooseberry attacked by sawfly (I think)
I have a gooseberry xenia 3 years old never had many fruit as it was affected by mildew and now this year it has been absolutely destroyed by sawfly. Is it worth trying to revive or should I give up on it and plant something else?

Beechgrove Garden Story
I thought that Beechgrove Garden fans would like to know about The Beechgrove Garden Story. A special 40 year celebration of Beechgrove. On the 19th August at 17:35 on BBC One Scotland. Unfortunately I can't find it on BBC One or Two but apparently it will be available on Iplayer later. My favourite gardening programme :)

Slugs gone ?
I believe that the last few weeks of dry weather has helped get rid of slugs from my garden Normally - by early August - the slimy creatures start appearing on the lawn edges But this year - I have yet to see a single slug Unless they had the ability to go extremely deep to damp earth - hopefully, this year will see fewer…

Good strong vine eyes?
Hi, can anyone recommend a place to purchase good heavy duty vine eyes? I bought some back in January from Wickes and fixed them into garden wall as part of a wire support for an espalier apple tree. I got 3 inch ones as I wanted the wires to be held 2 inches from the wall for airflow When I came to tighten the wires with…

Drought dead lawn. What now?
Like most people our lawns look brown and dead. Recent light rain seems to have revived our back lawn a little but the front one which received a dose of Weed and Feed just before the drought arrived seems as dead as a dodo. You can actually pull the roots up and they crumble into dust. So what,s the most energy saving way…

Horse Manure - during growing season
I have been growing runner beans in the same vegetable patch for some years. This year they were not doing well, so I have been adding some horse manure to the ground during the growing season to improve the soil condition (seams to have worked well). I just wondered if this was OK to do? (i.e no health implications).

How to get rid of fairy moss
My lawn is slowly getting taken over by fairy moss. I have tried weed killers and moss killers but they don't work including lawn sand. I have found salt kills it bu it comes back again and is spreading something terrible. The recent dry spell and the salt has helped a lot but I can see it coming back in places especially…

Hedge suggestions/advice please
I have an area of hard standing for my bins and want to screen it with hedging. I also want some hedging to close in the side entrance to my garden (choosing hedging rather than fence to be more wildlife friendly). The narrowest bit to fill is 0.5m. The hardstanding is on the NW corner of a corner plot so although NW it…

Mint Pest
I have 5 different varieties of mint in pots, and despite the hot weather, most are surviving. A couple of them though, mainly the common garden mint, have gone a little yellow, even though they were watered, and it looks as though something has been nibbling at the leaves. We have slug traps down, but that's all I can…
