David Austin roses - arrrgh help!
As a new gardener i was delighted when I was gifted a £100 voucher at work as a thank you. In an attempt to get repeat flowering and easy care i decided on some roses. I have shied away from roses in the garden in the past as my great grandmother and my grandmother always said they were hard work and troublesome. However i…

Garden Clearance - Clay Layer 12" down
Hi, First post here as I'm looking for some feedback/advice on gardening project I've managed to get myself into. I'm not a keen gardener, just mow the lawn and strim the edges normally. :) Potted history - bought new house 5 years ago and paid for builders to lay the turf. Over the years we've had very soggy lawn…

Plant ID
Hi Please, can someone help identify what this plant is. I bought them from Morrisons, and planted them in my previous house -- they where difficult to grow (infact one died off) but I moved the remaining one and it seemed to do well. So we moved, and I took it with me - however it did not survive - but I really liked them…

Clearing an neglected garden
In front of my house, across the track and in a field, is an area of fenced off used-to-be-a-garden. I reckon about 10m by 15m. In the past (pre-me) this garden was very well tended and had a great variety of fruit and vegetables in it. Amongst all the overgrown weeds and rubbish there are two redcurrant bushes and some…

Planter made from wooden gravel boards
Anyone made planters out of gravel boards? How long did they last? I have built an intricate starwberry tower out of treated gravel boards and want to get an idea of how long they last. 3 years ago I made a planter out of pallet wood. What a mistake - they rotted out after 2 years and made a mess as all the soil containing…

Nicotania
We have them growing here and there but never planted any. They grow in some strange positions which they change every year. Ten have now started growing underneath a large rose bush and I want to transplant them. I've lifted and moved a few and even though they've only grown in this position this year they have quite a…

Rhubarb and Cats?
I am hoping to grow some Rhubarb and Mint in the garden to use with cooking in the future as my father did in the old days however, my neighbour noted a word of caution on having Rhubard saying it is dangerous for her 6 cats who sit in my garden regularly. I understand the leaves are poisonous but surely a cat wouldn't eat…

Looking advice on Gazebos
My patio area is quite big and for a recent social event we borrowed a gazebo when I seen first hand how useful it could be I said ‘that’s for me!’ While it’s pretty near the end of the season I’m thinking that now might be a good opportunity to purchase. I’m after a 6x3 gazebo, a cream colour and the stronger the better.…

Recommend me some exotic trees for the UK
We will be after several large (5ft and taller) trees for our garden once its finished, but want something a little exotic/foreign looking if possible. I've always like tree ferns (dicksonia antarctica) but know they need looking after and wrapping up in the winter. Can you suggest any other trees that are winter hardy,…

Getting rid of decking!
I've got a lot of decking in my back garden that was installed prior to when I purchased the house. It looks rubbish now and there's the occasional rat hiding under it. Has anyone had their decking removed and garden landscaped with something nicer? What sort of effort and cost would be involved? I'm just looking at order…

strawberry plants and VegTrug
Hi, This year I planted some strawberry plants in my VegTrug and they have been quite successful. Well, what I mean is that the grandchildren have always been able to find a strawberry or two. They have, kind of, taken over the large planter and I am intending to leave them there with the hope that next year I'll get more…

Nemaslug
Has any one on here used nemaslug to control slugs and snails? I am considering using it to protect my hostas if nothing else. There is little slug activity just not as its so dry, but once the ground gets wet I know they will be out in force again. If you have used it, how many times did you apply it through the season to…

Border soil in greenhouse
I have planted tomatoes in the greenhouse border for two of the last three years and won't take any risks next year. When you are told to change the soil (it sounds so easy) just how deep will I have to dig down please? Is there a best time to do this?

Do I need to buy fresh soil?
Hi! :) I don't have any gardening experience at all but have inherited a yard with a bunch of pots that are filled with soil but not much else except for occaisonal weeds. I'd like to have a go at sorting it out and making it look pretty but I'm not sure where to start- do I keep the soil currently in the pots? Throw it…

Wasp nest
We had a wasp nest in the loft area which is accessed through a room upstairs. The council dealt with the wasps from the outside and they have gone Its on the lining of the roof which isnt easy to get too as there is insulation below it and the loft is only partially boarded Does the nest they made need to be removed from…

It started with the goldfinches - Senecio cineraria
Last year we bought a hanging basket that included a silver-leaf ragwort (Senecio cineraria). Somewhat surprisingly it over-wintered and this spring we planted it out in the borders where it has flourished. Not long after planting though, we started to notice bits of it broken off and lying on the ground. So, being the…

What's attacking my apples?
Something is attacking my apples. It's a sort of "fluffy", sticky brown mass sort of thing - I usually find (but not always) at the "blossom" end of the apple. Think it's probably some sort of insect burrowing into the apple. I can wipe the surface bit of it off - but suspect the "probable insect pest" has already burrowed…
