So have I. That's why I bought Jackson's posts and panels in the 1980s and 90s and never painted them.

    They're still there.

There are various brands of recycled plastic decking, which include all the components needed to make a self-coloured fence, but the last time I looked they were expensive. Although a good idea, I doubt if they would be more cost-effective than wood.

    ... or last longer!

At least wood is repairable/patchable. Oh, and cheaper.

You could use the money saved to pay a bloke wot paints fences.
  • Thanks Davesnave, do you have a link to Jacksons you have, did quick search but no joy.
Ahouse near us has plastic fencing which is also decorative and looks like wood finish but owner is bedridden/ill so cant really go knocking on door.
The extra expence will be worth it as they would be situated directly under runoff of neighbours building which has no guttering.

I think this may be the really expensive fencing referred to above:

Guess it costs an arm and several legs as guaranteed for 25 years!!
Being polite and pleasant doesn't cost anything!

The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.

My wooden fence was old, when I moved in 28 years ago...it’s now even older, but has needed virtually no maintenance in that time, in an exposed windy location in the Highlands. I can’t imagine how many plastic fences I would have needed over that period :rotfl:!

To be honest, I would address this before installing any fencing.

Can't really put guttering up which is why it has to be plastic if afford able otherwise conctrete gravel boards to the required height; ugly and heavy.

You may not be able to put up guttering at present, but if it were me and a neighbour didn't wish to address this issue, I'd find a way to direct that water back at the wall of the building, providing them with more incentive.
