Hi
New to gardening this year.
Looking to plant a fig tree that my dad has been cultivating for me in a pot. I’d like to plant in the ground.
What is the best time of year to do this and what type of compost/soil should I use?
Thanks
F

If it's in a pot, any time, and now is as good a time as any, soil is relatively warm so the roots can continue growing while the leaves are still just buds and not taking energy
Direct into soil may not be wise, figs will romp away, they do better for fruiting with restricted roots, like in a very big pot, or planted in a root restricting bag like this
https://kenmuir.co.uk/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=461 other suppliers are available
If going into a large pot, just bog standard universal compost will do, but bear in mind it may become top heavy so maybe bung some bricks in the bottom, or use a frost proof clay pot
Alternatively, get bags of John Innes number 3 which is soil based and will be heavy enough & retain moisture longer. It is also more expensive
PS ordinary garden soil will do, figs do not require lush soil & cosseting, assuming you are not in middle of a windy moorland of courseEight out of ten owners who expressed a preference said their cats preferred other peoples gardens0
