What oil to use for mower engine
I have an 24 year old Hayter autodrive mower with a Briggs and Stratton Quantum engine. As it is getting more and more expensive to service each year I want to give it a miss this year. I have checked the oil level and the dip stick tells me to add more oil. I have no oil specifically for mowers but I have oil given to me…

Weeds coming up through stones
Hi all my front garden is just a raised area cordoned off with little wooden stakes and filled with small stones/gravel and I get a lot of weeds coming through it. There are liners under the stones, but are very old (ive been there 10 years and who knows how long they were down before I moved in) and have obviously…

Leatherjackets in compost
The compost is being made in a recycled wooden crate, slatted wood, measuring about 5 feet x 4 feet. Compost is dropping out of the base on to the ground. Lovely stuff, except that it has small leatherjackets in it - crane fly larvae. They are about half an inch long, and about 20 of them in a bucketful. Should I try to…

Robot lawn mowers
Has anyone got one, used one or have any advice? Although it's not a large lawn I'm finding it increasingly difficult to mow it and wondered whether it made economic sense to buy one as opposed to getting someone in to mow it. My mower has just died so I need to buy a new one anyway.

Hi all, I'm looking for some ideas and inspiration for a small bed that we currently have (more or less) empty in the front of our property. The bed was cleared last year as it was full of Ground Elder which I've painstakingly cleared and left empty for a full growing season to catch any bits of roots that I had missed.…

Raised bed sowing
I've built some raised beds this year for the 1st time ever, having used traditional beds before and want to grow the same crops. Noting that crops can be sown closer together in raised beds, I have placed onion sets in a grid system but wondered how I should sow seeds such as carrots that are traditionally sowed in rows?…

Buying and planting Tulips "in the green"
hi there was looking at Tulips in B and Q as we never got round to planting bulbs. If I plant them now will they flower this spring generally? I had assumed so but was looking online and it said probably not until next year. Plus should I plant them deeper than usual? This would be in a border. thanks

Vegetables that look after themselves
We have a static caravan in mid Wales that we visit every four or five weeks and I'm looking to (re)establish the vegetable garden. The problem is that we only visit every for or five weeks so I need plants that are tolerant of neglect. Any suggestions welcome. I'll add that I'm pretty clueless when it comes to growing veg…

Setting up as a Commercial Mole Catcher
I've recently become quite adept at trapping moles around my own premises so im wondering if it might be a profitable side line for me to offer my services as a mole catcher. Does anyone here happen to know what formalities are required for me to do this? Although they are pests I guess there are animal welfare…
