National Insurance Deductions
Hi, I work part time 20 hours per week. Earning minimum wage, £11.44 per hour. This month is the first month that I have received the full amount since NMW went up. I am confused as to whether my pay slip is correct. Can anyone explain this to me please. So, I am under the impression that as someone who only earns…

Job history deleted
Need references from HR of old jobs that I worked there, but their helpdesk say data protection rules mean they deleted all the records. I have tax and hmrc papers but new job needs references from HR. I'd be grateful for any help on what I can do. Do businesses really delete all traces of old employees after a few years?

Was my increased salary reasonable?
I have been fortunate to apply and get a promotion at work with a 20% pay rise. I was and am happy with this. It has though been brought to my attention that the person I have replaced was on nearly £20,000 more than my new package for an identical job with similar experience. This is mildly irritating at worst but curious…

Appealing job interview after rejection
So a friend of mine has been doing an NHS role for 18 months on a secondment basis. They got the funding to make it permanent so they said you can apply to get it permanently. Bit annoying she had to apply for her own job but guess they have to do it all official. Shes good at her job, management are happy with he so we…

Easing back into work after I was off for months due to injury, is this reasonable of employer
Not sure if this counts as a vent or advice. Job is meant to be a 9-5 and has 90 minutes of breaks per day, to ease me back in they have given me a 6 and a half hour shift, with just 15 minutes of break and means I cover the lunch period which is the busiest part of day and first thing in morning and I don't work the part…

Dress code?
I've more or less got to the final selection for a craft apprenticeship with Scottish power. I'm at a total loss regarding the dress code. There is a practical, some sort of written and an interview. I did phone and ask but she wasn't very good in English she just said clothes suitable for outdoor and boots for outdoor as…

Struggling to settle in new role
Hi All, After 5 years with 1 my last company I took a new job offer around and am now 4 weeks in, about to start my 5th week. I left my previous job because there had been a takeover and the threat of redundancy loomed. I don’t feel like I’ve settled too well into the new role and the culture is very different to what I…

Repaying Training Costs
I've been with my company for a little over a year. I was roped into doing some training courses at work that are subject to clawback agreements. I've now decided to leave and I'm aware that I'll need to repay the training costs as per agreements, but I'm unsure whether they can be repaid pre deductions, by way of salary…

How to receive US Dollars for work in the UK
I have a new full time employed job and the company is in the USA. So they will be paying me in dollars each month, which at the moment will go to my Starling Bank account and be converted to pounds. Is this the best way to receive money if you employer is in the USA or is there a better bank account than Starling? Also,…

Is this allowed?
I am sure this is allowed but let me explain. I've been in my current employment for just over two years. Up until very recently it's been great with no issues. However, I support vulnerable adults and their support needs vary greatly. However, one (A), since before xmas has been targeting me. This has resulted in a…

Things to do before starting my first job?
Hiya, Joined this forum as I can't find anything specific on the topic - I am finishing university in a couple of weeks and have a full-time job starting mid-July. I was wondering if there are any things eg. getting my first credit card, creating a budget etc. that people would recommend sorting out before I start work?…

Moved departments in NHS with different work and hours
Hello everyone, I am one of 3 senior nurses in a suite of operating theatres, due to organisational changes one senior anaesthetic practitioner will come under our budget, and one of us will be forced to move to another department, no one wants to go. The other department uses x-ray a lot and I for example cannot wear a…

Work hotel stays as a taxable benefit - confused how this actually works
Hi all, As part of my job I often have to stay in a hotel, paid for by work, in order to be able to get into central London before public transport starts up. Although this is paid by the company, it is a taxable benefit, but it's the mechanics of this that are confusing me. What seems to happen is, my "Payments" section…

Money Moral Dilemma: Should I pay my colleagues £500 for looking after their house and cats?
This week's MoneySaver who wants advice asks... Two colleagues, who are a couple, were going travelling for a few months and asked me to house-sit for them and look after their two cats. We didn't discuss money, but they presented it as a way of reducing the cost of my commute (which was true) so I agreed. When they…

Working at a company with no HR
I've worked for global companies that have an HR department and once in my life I worked for a small start up with no HR. I'm in the process of job hunting again and I had an interview with a company that had been trading for 70 years, but had no HR. They were just using recruiters to find candidates. From the beginning I…

Pay rise withheld after promotion
The company I work in has a negotiated pay rise. The company in recent years has changed rules so that anyone securing a promotion between certain dates does not get this negotiated rise. It is not well publicised and not mentioned in job adverts. This doesn’t seem to have been a problem in previous years but the pay rise…
