Odd computer problem

Windows not responding on Start Up? (inc HijackThis log)
The laptop will not open windows completely allowing me to do anything. Yesterday I had a problem after an AVG update and I did a system restore which worked fine. Today the start up page loads then I get the a box stating windows is not resopnding. I am now in safe mode.

Which browser is best?
I have used Firefox for a few years after switching from IE9 but now it seems to be locking up quite often. I don't like Chrome and really like having Favorites/Bookmarks (or whatever each browser calls them) as a column on the left hand side from top to bottom. Any recommendations? TIA
