hp laptop screen not displaying

Hi
My laptop hp g6 lefthand screen hinge broke a while ago so we've been using it with one side a bit wonky but we propt it up to keep it level.
Then the screen started blanking, it would go black if the screen/lid was moved. This became worse and worse and now there's no display at all.
The screen lights up some times dark grey or light grey, or blacksout if you move the screen back and forward.
I've opened it up to check if there's a loose cable but there isn't. The desktop came on for a few seconds but went off...sometimes you can see the desktop ghosting in the background.
I don't think it's the screen itself, so I'm thinking maybe it's the screen cable?
If not what else could it be ? It's £5 for a screen cable so I'm thinking of replacing it.
What else can I check?
Thanks

It's possible the cable is damaged, can you plug in an external monitor or TV ?Science isn't exact, it's only confidence within limits.0 -
Well, I could use an hdmi cable and connect to my tv in the past but now my tv just says no signal which is odd.
Wonder why it's not displaying on my tv anymore ? I'm sure there's no buttons to be pressed on laptop for it to come on my tv, it was simply connect cable and change to hdmi channel on TV.0 -
So if there's no picture from laptop to tv, what could be at fault on the laptop? Is the motherboard faulty maybe?0

its now showing on my tv via a hdmi cable...the laptop screen is no longer white but just light black...every time I restart the laptop, it flashes up for a second (with the windows writing) then goes black, then after a little while the windows logo comes up and disappears and the pointer comes and goes off!!! its really bizzare. but now working fine via external monitor.
could it still be a faulty screen cable? I actually accidentally banged the laptop on the table when the white screen went off and dark screen came back0 -
Sounds like the cable to the backlight (LED) or the backlight power inverter (CCFL).“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Could be , but it may be worth running in safe mode first see if the screen on the lappy works, also worth testing with a live linux usb. I am currently struggling with my lappy using windows 10 preview , but running with Linux is fine...but it's not HP but it could be a rogue update.0
