This new year tax year 2008/9 income tax starts at 20%. It does not apply to 2007/8 in which one still can have the first £2000 odd income taxed at 10%. With the BOE dropping rates yesterday which bank will be first to drop their saving rates? Why should saver be penalised when the likes of nationwide raise their mortgage rates a few days before the base rate is lowered?
