Reusable tassimo pods
I was given a tassimo coffee machine for Christmas by my parents. I was a bit dubious about it but grown to love it. My concern with it is the cost of the pods and the plastic waste that comes from them. Are there reusable pods available for the machine? I believe it needs a barcode as the pods have a barcode that the…

Fish pie
Had a fairly old relative over for supper last night so did an old fashioned fish pie. It was delicious. Unfortunately a good part of the deliciousness was the good quality fish which isn’t cheap. My relative lives mostly alone but likes cooking and is a good cook. Having always placed a great emphasis on good food I’d…

Cupcake help needed!
Good morning all. I'm posting this here because (a) I don't know where else to and (b) we can't afford to keep experimenting to see if I can solve the problem! I like to bake what it seems are nowadays called "cupcakes", by which I mean plain old little sultana cakes in paper cases, and I just can't crack it. The recipe I…

Weekly Flylady Thread 11th February 2019
What is FLYLADY? Well, it's our version of the US flylady idea - but we work on the principle that housework is not fun, it's boring, can be time-consuming, is often thankless but, unfortunately, necessary. It's here on Old Style to provide the support we all need and to make the whole task easier and quicker. We also…

Freezing button mushroom?
Google says this may be possible but was hoping for feedback from someone who's actually tried it - less about moneysaving and more about avoiding waste. I don't like slimy mushrooms and would plan to use them up in chilli etc. Any thoughts?

Trickle vents driving me mad!
As the title suggests I have some trickle vents in my bedroom window that are driving me mad! They seem to catch the wind at just the right angle for it to whistle through them all night. Last night was the worst so far as it was particularly windy, the noise woke me up many times and there’s nothing, seemingly, that I can…

Advice needed to remove smell of smoke from second-hand pram
I have de-lurked myself to ask some cleaning advice. I bought a really nice second hand pram complete with covers. ( I do enjoy walking with a proper pram) It's no bother to give it a good scrub and wash the covers. However,on getting it home, it has developed a distinct smokey odour. I am rather cross with myself that I…

Single vegan - food - buddies wanted
I live by myself, work full time. Looking for vegan buddies to share shopping lists/lunch to work ideas in a money saving fashion. When I am in my base office - I have my cup/tea/coffee/sugar/plant milk and normally some form of lunch from home. When I move between our 2 offices (there and back same day) - all goes out o…

Can I save any more?
I’m new to the world of being a homeowner and paying energy etc... My first bills are coming in, I’m not sure if they’re ok or if I can save more. I’ve been on these forums for years and feel like I’ve picked up loads of useful tips and tricks over the years. I like to live fairly old style in terms of household things. I…

Student died after eating pasta
Student died after eating pasta he left out on worktop Read more: https://metro.co.uk/2019/01/28/student-died-eating-pasta-left-worktop-five-days-8401285/?ito=cbshare I know we all like saving leftovers and treating sell/use-by dates with some disdain, but this is what happens when it goes badly wrong.

Bottom of the fridge soup suggestions
Obviously some things go better with others when cooking. I thought it might be useful to post recipes of things which had worked well, and perhaps others can suggest things they'd tried to get to work that hadn't been so successful. I've just made Carrot & Cauliflower soup from the bottom of my fridge: Tablespoon oil 3/4…
