Leftover Brisket
Have some of this leftover from last night, but the only recipes I can find involve sticking it in a sandwich which I don't want to do. I was thinking rather than sticking it in the freezer where it will never see the light of day again, that I would prepare it into a ready meal for me to eat one day next week. If I chop…

Good Peanut Butter
I know there are other threads on this, but mostly old and I think many recipies have changed in recent times. Also this strictly shouldn't go on the OS board but it's a pleasant place so ... I used to buy a couple of brands of PB but have noticed they have changed and now have added palm oil and/or sugar, humph. I don't…

Summer fans and winter heaters
Perhaps this is just me but I wanted to share it, as obvious as it may be... I knew I needed a new fan heater for this coming winter so I purposely went looking and purchased one around August, when it was of little practical use. As its now getting cold my thoughts are turning towards a desktop type fan, given they are…

Price increases
I order my shopping online and whilst I generally notice price increases, today I spotted that butter has gone up to £1.63!:eek::eek: When did that price jump up so much?? I know they will blame Brexit however, we are not even out of the EU yet which makes me wonder when the real increases hit (if they do) how much…

Healthy Desserts
I have a very sweet tooth but have managed to cut out sugar in my coffee and on my cereal. However, I still have a sweet tooth when it comes to cakes and desserts. I try to limit it to just now and again when it comes to full fat desserts but I find I need something after my tea, just the meal isn't enough. I've been…

How to simplify christmas dinner
My 78 year old Mum is insisting she does xmas dinner for the family as she has always done. But she is getting older now and is starting to not cope with things as well as she did. We all love roast chicken & trimmings for dinner. So is there a way to simplify the dinner? For example, could I buy a chicken now, cook it,…

Best way to drain tofu
I'm not sure if this is in the right board so forgive me if it's not. After eating a tofu dish at Tampopo recently, I want to start eating it more often but I read that you have to drain it. Can anyone recommend the best way to do this and for how long? I did actually find a tofu press online that presses/drains it for you…

Weekly Flylady Thread 6th November 2017
What is FLYLADY? Well, it's our version of the US flylady idea - but we work on the principle that housework is not fun, it's boring, can be time-consuming, is often thankless but, unfortunately, necessary. It's here on Old Style to provide the support we all need and to make the whole task easier and quicker. We also…

miele washing machine
Hello all, not sure if this is the best board, but I trust the wisdom and experience of OSers! When we retired and did our sums, one of the 'lines' was 'replace washing machine' and we think that time may have come (going to speak with repairer tomorrow, but we know the feeling!) We set aside enough for a Miele, having had…

What is a "buttie"?
As I type this, I'm preparing some egg sandwiches, for lunch at work tomorrow, and it has reminded me of a discussion I had recently, with a work colleague. I make my sandwiches from two slices of bread, buttered, and with the filling between them. When I referred to one of my sandwiches as an egg buttie, he argued that I…

Economies of scale
Recently I shared a particularly large delivery of firewood with my neighbour for a really good price. Which got me thinking what else is there that I can share. So far I have thought of half a pig and a sack of spuds. What else saves money by sharing the Economies of scale?

Winter picnic
I am planning a winter picnic. We cannot use a stove or bbq at the location but I have just seen a fab idea for taking hotdog sausages in a wide-mouth flask! Aside from soup and hot drinks what else could I take?

Floor Cleaning
How do you clean yours? I have a mop & bucket but I think mops are pretty manky things. I have a Vax steam cleaner that a I hardly use. Maybe I haven't really given it a fair go but I prefer using those floor wipes because I only have two small pieces of vinyl flooring to clean in my home.
