Washing hair in the bath - how did people manage in the olden days?
I moved in here last summer and there's only a bath. No shower or even a mixer tap, and I can't afford either at the minute. I bought one of those push-on rubber hoses you attach to the taps but I'm now on my third as eventually they start leaking and spraying water everywhere. Before showers existed, how did people manage…

Wrinkly eating apples and puff pastry
I have half a block of puff pastry which needs using up (been in the fridge for a week), and four eating apples which are getting near to binning. My thought was to stew the apples and make a pie, but worried that the pastry would go soggy. Can I just slice the apples onto the raw pastry and bake or would that be too dry?…

Keeping Ginger
I've started using quite a lot of ginger as I've grown my recipe repertoire in the last few months, but not enough so as not to have to 'keep' it. It isn't so much a problem if I'm picking up my shopping as I buy a smaller bit, but the last home delivery brought a huuuge piece and I could have sworn I read that it could be…

Help me to get the 'swish' back in my Swish curtain rail!
After some DIY, including new plaster on the ceilings and painting, my swish curtain rails have lost their swishiness. I have cleaned them but they are still sticking badly. I am constantly having to hook the curtains back up in places as you really have to yank them when opening and closing them. I'd be happy to get rid…

'Unsuitable for home freezing' - Advice
Bought a parsnip and butternut squash bake from Tesco a month ago - froze it not realising it said unsuitable on the back. Got it out tonight it's got some ice inside. I've put it in the oven for an hour anyway .. Will it be ok to eat? It's effectively just veg cheese and breadcrumbs?!…

Which food, kept in your fridge, really saves time or wastage?
Hello, I'm newly retired and delighted to have time to cook from scratch as I did years ago. However, I wonder whether there are things I could do/safely store, perhaps on a weekly basis, to cut down on prep and aid convenience. What do you tend to do and how do you store such stuff - how long for? Any tips would be a…

Frozen sausagemeat
Good morning, I don't know if this is the right place to post this- apologies if not. I froze some sausagemeat that I bought in August and today I took it out of freezer to make sausage meatballs and it says in the label to use within 3 months. Do you think it will be ok to use? If it were just me eating it then I would…

Washing Duvets in the machine?
I usually bring mine to the laundrette/dry cleaners where they have big commercial washing machines but it costs £12 for a double duvet, which adds up over a year. Is it safe to stuff it in my machine at home? It would be quite a squeeze as mine doesn't have a modern, large drum. I've tried putting it in the bath, but that…
