Carrot cake icing - which cheese?
My first attempt at making a proper carrot cake tomorrow. Last weekend I made just the sponge, which came out well, but didn't do any icing. All the recipes say to use either "soft cheese" or "cream cheese". Nothing specifies this in any more detail. I see Aldi do two types of plain soft cheese: full fat and lighter. Tesco…

What OS habits you can't stop once you are better off?
You worked hard all your life, you saved and scrimped, composted peelings, grew your veg, made do and mended for dear life...then one day you reap the fruits of your frugality and you are debt free. Not only debt free, but reasonably comfortable. You no longer need to stretch that chicken to 6 meals, no longer need to make…

Did anyone watch 'Shop Well for Less'?
I watched the programme this evening. It's to the same format as 'Eat Well for Less' but with clothes and other items. They reviewed shampoo and waterproof jackets and told you where they came from. Unfortunately, when it came to clothes they didn't say where they had been bought. I don't think I'll be watching again.

Cooking on a mini grill/oven
I'm looking for ideas of home cooked meals that can be prepped/cooked/frozen in advance in single portions that can be re-heated/cooked in a mini oven/grill. It's the Cookworks one sold in Argos so 18l capacity (could just about roast a small/medium chicken it) and has oven/grill/toast facility. Off the top of my head I'm…

Recipe for Gluten Free Rolls
Good afternoon I'm really desperate! A few years ago I saved a recipe for gluten free rolls that someone posted, I'm sorry I can't remember who posted it. It was an awesome recipe with a batter like consistency and I seem to have lost the recipe. Please can anyone help? I'll be really grateful. Thanks so much :D :o

Has anyone done Slow Cooker Freezer 'dump meals'?
I see it done quite often online (blogs etc), people making SC Freezer 'dump meals' and am wondering if anyone here has done it, and could share the pros and cons? It's basically where you bulk assemble a variety of SC meals in freezer bags (say 2 weeks worth or more) and then just 'dump' them in the SC when you want to…

Laundry saver
I am old fashioned enough to still starch some items, eg napkins, tablecloths, & found spray starch better than useless & powder starch very expensive. So I mix 1 tablespoon of cornflour with a little cold water, then top up to 1 pint (yes I AM old fashioned!)with boiling water & have the perfect mix. I store it in the…

Liquid soap saver & other tips.
Instead of buying new bottles each time at a cost of 60-70p buy a litre bottle of cheap bath foam (Aldi is 59p) which will give you 3 refills. I've also stopped buying laundry stain remover at a cost of around £5 a bottle. It doesn't work, a total waste of money. Instead I bought a bar of laundry soap in Asda for 50p it's…

Small slow cooker for single people
I have a medium sized slow cooker and live on my own, it makes more food than I need but I freeze portions then forget to take them out of the freezer and end up buying ready meals. I've seen a very small slow cooker which will just make one meal at a time and wonder if that will be better. Any ideas?
