hi guys
I would really appreciate some advice ..
ive been tasked with making a birthday cake for OH and its a death star one the kids want. so I was thinking of baking the cake in two pyrex bowls to get the round shape. I was going to do vanilla sponge and strawberry buttercream the cover in grey fondant icing ... but im not sure of the best way to ensure a smooth coverage ?
I will be adding some panelling which should hopefully cover s few misshaps
any advice or tips would be great ... ive read that if I put a thin layer of buttercream on them fridge it for a bit then put the icing on .. is this right ?
oh and any other star wars themed easyish party food ideas ?
Thanks
Lisa

That's going to be a tough task, I find fondant hard enough to get smooth on a normal cake! If you look on Pinterest, there are some examples of death star cakes, so you might be able to find some tips.
I'd potentially think of covering the cake with a grey buttercream and then just doing the paneling in fondant, as a) that will be much easier and b) the paneling will cover most of the cake anyway.
If you're going to go with fondant all over then you definitely need to cover the cake in a thin layer of buttercream first to help the fondant stick. To stick the panels on you can use more buttercream or even heat some jam up and brush it on to the pieces.
Some other (easy) ideas:
Stormtrooper marshmallows:
Lightsaber fruit skewers:
Leia cinnamon buns:
Again, if you look on Pinterest, there's loads of ideas0 -

The lightsaber fruit skewers look fantastic & make me feel a real 4th class mum for not realising I could have used their enthusiasm to coax fresh fruit into them...
Please post pics of finished cake (er, completed, not the pile of crumbs)?! Huge kudos for such a fun birthday cake!0 -
