walk down memory lane TB hospital

Back in the 1950s I contracted Tuberculosis - now I am not exactly sure of what age I entered hospital, but I spent my third birthday in Glan Ely Hospital, Cardiff. and I was there about a year and half.as my birthday…

Hard water and making tea :(
We live in a hard water area--most comes from the chalky Downs--& it plays havoc with me muvva's favourite hot beverage. She has tried so many teapots but they all end up caked in dark, slate-like covering within a few days even though we rinse every time, & the kettle has one of those metal balls in it. The tea often has…

replacing a much loved bread maker
I love making bread myself the traditional way; but also find my breadmaker very useful if I'm out for the day / overnight etc. I have had a basic Panasonic for about 20 years, and the pan is no longer "non-stick" leading to problems - and of course, the replacement pan is almost as much as a new breadmaker (in fact, more…

Cheap Vinegar for cleaning
If you plan on using Vinegar for cleaning, getting rid of weeds or whatever. If you can get to a Chinese shop. They have pretty strong stuff in gallon containers. It will need diluting. Be sure to keep it out of reach of children. It will work out a lot cheaper than our British stores. You might be able to check online.

Removing pink dye run from my daughters multicoloured garment
Hi all, My wife has spent ages knitting a red, white and blue cardigan for my daughter. I put it in a 40 wash and the red has run into the white. Is there ANYTHING I can do to get rid of the pink and return the white section to white? My wife is absolutely distraught. Thanks in advance, hopefully!

Has anyone made red velvet cake without adding red colouring or beets?

Limescale remover
Sorry I did search to try and find a thread on this but couldn't find much - please point me in the right direction if there is one I've missed! We get absolutely terrible limescale where we live in the south. So much so that after cleaning the shower, removing all limescale, 1 shower shows up limescale marks again. I am a…

Tasteless pumpkin
Using the cash back shopping apps I duly went and got a pumpkin for -65p from sains. I made pumpkin and orange soup. It tasted like sick! Honestly! That was a few days ago and I can still taste it. I tried to rescue it by putting in the SC overnight with spices and some sugar but next day it still tasted terrible. I did…

Can I freeze these?
Hi all, impulsively to brought some of these this evening then when I got them home remembered my grand plan to have jacket potatoes and salad for dinners this week. What's the best way to freeze or preserve them? Or is it a lost cause?

Cooking smells in jacket!
Hello! I'm a bit more of a lurker on the forums, but I'm in desperate need of some Old Style Moneysaving advice (hoping this is the right place to post). I work in a small tearooms that isn't well ventilated. I do a lot of food prep and there's no door on the kitchen either so all the smells linger about the tearooms.…

Best non dairy spread for cake/buttercream?
I'm sure this must have been asked and answered, but I can't find the answer :) I've been asked to bake a dairy free Victoria sponge with jam & buttercream. The recipient is ok with eggs, it's just butter/milk they can't eat. So, my research (Google!) tells me that Vitalite is a good butter substitute as far as cake…

Velux windows
When we moved into our house the wooden frames on our velux windows had black mould stains on them from condensation. I've bought the maintenance and repair kits from Velux, but how do I get rid of the black staining before varnishing? I've got Astonish Mould and Mildew spray which isn't strong enough, so if anyone has any…
