Tasteless pumpkin

Using the cash back shopping apps I duly went and got a pumpkin for -65p from sains.
I made pumpkin and orange soup. It tasted like sick! Honestly! That was a few days ago and I can still taste it. I tried to rescue it by putting in the SC overnight with spices and some sugar but next day it still tasted terrible.
I did add some pumpkin to a veg soup with lots of other things for flavour but have 3/4 of the pumpkin sitting looking at me in the kitchen and I need to do something with it.
Will anything make it edible? If I roast it in the oven will that just use energy and it will still be bland?
I know I can chop it up and freeze it for adding to soups but I really would like to make something with it.

The big carving pumpkin Halloween pumpkins can be tough and tasteless. The smaller varieties tend to have more taste.

If you know someone with a rabbit you'll find a good home for it.

I usually use pumpkin to make curry. I do a couple - one with lentils & spinach and the other with just spinach.

You do need to use a good amount of spices and cook for a long time. I do mine in the slow cooker.

Our bunny died last week :(or I could have gone with your idea v4m.
Maybe it'll have to be curry then. Really the only thing that it will add will be a bit of fibre. I only got it as it was free and figured that I could make something with it.
I am reluctant to make pumpkin pie with it as I imagine it will be a waste of fuel and other ingredients.
Any point in covering it in spice and roasting in the oven if I have the oven on for something else?

Definitely - as long as its savoury!

I would dry fry some cumin and grind it up. Add to salt, pepper, chilli flakes and Chinese five spice, use enough and your pumpkin may be transformed when roasted.

I tried making pumpkin pie once and it was awful. I tried something different (can't remember what is was now) and that was awful too.
I came to the conclusion cooking with Pumpkin is a waste of time and effort :/

I so agree that the carving pumpkins are horrible to cook with. Very watery.
I grow lots of differwnt types of much more delicious ones. Look in a farmers or WI market and ask the growers cor their ideas. The current one you have is not worth cooking...you will waste the other ingredients.

It must be to American tastes! I too have tried using the inner flesh from those large pumpkins - and they are awful!
I do however like Butternut Squash and some of the smaller 'squashes' have made lovely curries and soups.
I have given up now on using the flesh from inside these large orange pumpkins - I just save the seeds and when they grow next year harvest most of them when they are small. - They taste so much better!
  • This will give it some taste :Dhttp://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/775669/thai-pumpkin-soup
    It's an annual favourite here.
