Does using a spin dryer really save money?
Keep hearing that spin dryers if you use a tumble dryer reduce the drying time and so save money... Really thinking about it because I have a bosch washing machine that supposedly has a 1400rpm spin -but it will only spin at that speed if you do a cotton wash :( - you can turn down the water temp etc but it still takes 1.5…

Bulk/Batch Cooking
Hi Everyone, Not sure if I am posting in the right place here, apologies if not. I'm desperately trying to reduce outgoings and one area I really need to look at is food shopping. My kids absolutely love spaghetti Bolognese and lasagne but I have to admit to having become really lazy buying countless jars of sauces and…

Chocolate gateau past BB?
Hi all, I need some advice. I have a chocolate gateau in the freezer which didn't get used last Christmas, and as it's too big for just OH & I it has just stayed there. I usually ignore BB dates but as it's fresh cream, & the BB date was Feb 2013, I don't know if it would be safe to use it or if I should bin it. Any advice…

Salmon (bones query)
Hi all, I would like to experiment with some salmon recipes but the thought of spending half my eating time fishing out bones (no pun intended!) doesn't thrill me at all. Is there anyway to avoid this as much as possible? Thanks x

Any advice welcome - need to cut weekly shop costs
I am sure many have posted similar to me in the past, but new to this site, so feel free to sign post me to someone else's post. I'm a single parent to a 6 year old and work 4 days a week as a teacher. Basically my outgoings are more than my in comings and struggle each month, but feel I always spend too much on food. I…

Making stock
I have just read the long and interesting thread on how to make your own stocks. I am liking the idea of a large tupperware kept in the freezer for leftovers and peelings to use when you are ready. Can I ask about the peelings eg carrots/potatoes. Do you need to scrub them first? I have just peeled lots of veggies but the…

Kitchen kick start needed!
I was bought up on a diet of ready made and frozen food and never saw my mum make a cake, pastry or anything more adventurous than a tomato, cucumber and lettuce salad. Even peas were processed and came from a tin. As an adult I have always been a little scared of cooking and also rather lazy - I often rely on meals with…

scottish power won't take my money (despite numerous calls) where do I stand?
This is a long one - please be patient as I need advice. What would you do...we moved into our house at the end of October and we immediately contacted the gas/electric supplier of the property (scottish power) to say we'd moved in/inform them to change our names on the bill etc and set up monthly £100 direct debit payment…

Planning for when I am on maternity leave - food
I am expecting a baby in May and I have been thinking due to our low income while I am off - I could batch cook things before to help with costs. I reckon we go through a pot of jam and marmalade a week which costs me a couple of pounds a week probably. I am sure I could make that? My partner likes chutney, salsa and that…

So much to do, how can I stop being overwhelmed?
2013 has been a badly run year for me, I managed to hang on to a basic house cleaning routine but things like washing bedding was badly neglected. The batch cooking and food planning went out the window, too many take always and last minute food dashes. My weight went up, my money went down - it's been a disaster. I really…

Jack Stonehouse mixer
Does anyone own a Jack Stonehouse food mixer? I got one of these for Xmas and tried using it today but it only operates for about 10 seconds before turning itself off! I'd like to be sure it's not something I'm doing wrong before I enter into the kerfuffle of sending it back to Amazon. Any advise appreciated.

Handwashing a jumper
Hi I was lucky enough to be given an expensive jumper for Christmas - which is handwash only. I usually steer clear of anything that needs to be handwashed and I am nervous about wrecking it! My washing machine has a handwash setting - does anyone use this for jumpers? Do you buy special liquid for handwashing? Any other…

Old Style in 2014?
Do you think it will get more popular in the coming year? All the old fashioned crafts and hobbies seem to be coming back in which is nice. I was wondering if the predicted increases in bills and the lack of increase in wages would send more people in an old style direction. Maybe just in little ways! It would be nice to…
