Chocolate gateau past BB?

Hi all, I need some advice. I have a chocolate gateau in the freezer which didn't get used last Christmas, and as it's too big for just OH & I it has just stayed there. I usually ignore BB dates but as it's fresh cream, & the BB date was Feb 2013, I don't know if it would be safe to use it or if I should bin it. Any advice would be very much appreciated, thanks.

Was it bought 'Frozen'? Or bought 'Fresh' and then frozen when you got it home?

I'd be tempted to defrost it - and 'have a sniff' ................... You're right, 'BBF' is only Best Before - very different from USE BY. Though, as you say, you DO need to be careful with 'dairy'.

Are you expecting visitors today? If it's STILL OK then it really does NEED to come out (1) to be eaten and (2) to make room for other stuff. If it's NOT OK, then it just needs to come out and get dumped.

Little hint for next time you freeze something like a huge gateau - cut it up into 'useable portions' and then put it back into it's box before freezing. Just think of all those lovely little 'Decadent Sunday Afternoon Treats' that you could have been enjoying .

Good Luck and I really hope you get to enjoy it ;).

It was bought frozen and has stayed frozen, I was hoping to use it New Year's eve, when DS and his fiancee and my dad are here, but I'm making a trifle as well just in case. Good idea to freeze in portions!

You know - as it was bought FROZEN, I'd be so tempted to take a chance ....................... but that's ME with a 'cast-iron stomach' ;).

You'd need to be so careful with anybody very young, elderly, pregnant or with suppressed immune systems :(.
  • I very much doubt that it would poison anyone. Pretty sure that its still "safe to eat", though the texture might have suffered a little.

You have nothing to lose by defrosting it, then trying a slice - yum, yum :D
    Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac ;)
  • If you are vulnerable in any way I wouldn't risk it.

It's probably going to have suffered a little from being frozen for so long, the surface may be a little dry or crusty.

Personally id defrost it and feed it to the family if it smelled and tasted fine, but probably not plan on using it if we had guests, purely from the aesthetic point of viea
Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.
  • Pass it here. I'll tidy it away for you.

As above. The "best before" date means that the texture or colour might not be right, not that it has become dangerous.

As it's got cream in it, you'll easily taste if anything has gone off.

Freezing stuff is essentially pausing it in the state it was at the time of freezing. If it wasn't off then, it shouldn't be off now (assuming your freezer is cold enough and hasn't had issues with warming up or being off for periods of time). Freezing for long periods of time generally just affects the quality of the food - freezer burn can cause a loss of taste and texture but the food should still be safe to eat.
  • I would risk it, but I am fit & healthy.

If it's a bit dry, cover in cream!
