Mine is massive, way tooooooo big. I've done an inventory and find I have about 3 months supply of tinned food, a freezer full to the top with allsorts and far too many packets of things like lentils and barley, about 2 years worth. So new years resolution is to EAT THE STOCKPILE. Then theres the other stock pile,…

Help me save money this month
Hi all I am getting married on the 14th and I have quite a lot extra to pay out, due to a number of unexpected bills (and no savings due to 2 redundancies in 2 years) we are running quite short this month. I have a reasonably well stocked storecupboard but it is always the fresh meat that seems to cost me the most in…

How do I get label glue off of tin cans?
Any ideas how I get label glue off of tin cans? I've tried soaking in boiling water with washing up liquid and also trying to pull off with my fingernails, but the glue is sticking fast! I want to punch holes in them to make tealight lantens for the garden (if I ever get around to sorting it out!)

Substitute ground almonds for breadcrumbs in this recipe?
This morning I'm trying this recipe for the first time: http://www.reallynicerecipes.com/recipe/cakes_biscuits/treacle-tart My husband is gluten-free. I can make GF pastry just fine but I'm looking at the tart filling recipe. It calls for breadcrumbs. I have his GF bread which I can blitz but I'm worried the tart won't be…

Here is a puzzle for you!
I like to cook from scratch and do so most nights. But since March our situation has changed. I am now working 2-3 night shifts a week (nurse in nursing home) and hubby has had his hours cut and changed in his retail job. He now only has 20 hours but has to work 3-7pm every day - its really carp and money has suddenly…

Half empty Freezer
Just bought myself a 2nd freezer to keep in garage and fill up with reduced food and batch cooking etc... However I don't have much to put in it yet, need to build it up, but don't want to leave it half empty as I believe this used more energy to keep cold. My friend advised putting newspaper in to fill it up but I don't…

Beurre noisette/clarified butter
Anyone know anything about this? I've just made beurre noisette, to make financiers (almond biscuits). It's basically clarified butter, so there's a light brown oil with quite a lot of impurities. I'm not clear whether to incorporate the impurities (which are brown particles (not burnt!)) into my biscuits or not, or…

Homemade Soup vs Heinz.
Hiya! I'm trying to get my shopping costs down so that the savings can go towards our house deposit. Nearly every lunch time I sit down to a very tasty tin of Heinz carrot and corriander soup. Now, I've had a look online, and I'm wondering would it be cheaper to bulk buy, batch cook and freeze the soup. Obviously it might…

Empire Roast Chicken help, please!
I made jamie oliver's empire roast chicken tonight (basically roast chicken marinaded in curry paste) and it was delicious (and the gravy was AMAZING!) Can I make stock with the carcass or will the spices ruin it? Or would it be ok for a curry?

Separating fat from stock instantly
Just thought I'd share a quick tip that I discovered today. Probably a lot of you will know things like this already but it really helped me. To separate fat from HM chicken stock, pour the stock into a cheap plastic food bag ( I did this with the bag lining a big jug so it didn't spill). You will see the fat floats on top…

Tried to clean taps - think stripped chrome off
I have chrome plated taps in the bathroom. The end of the cold tap was cover in limescale and I read if you soak paper towel in lemon juice and wrap around it should remove limescale. Well I did this and when I removed it (I used a cotton wool face pad) I could see silver bits on the pad and now the end of my tap looks…
