How do I get label glue off of tin cans?

Any ideas how I get label glue off of tin cans? I've tried soaking in boiling water with washing up liquid and also trying to pull off with my fingernails, but the glue is sticking fast!
I want to punch holes in them to make tealight lantens for the garden (if I ever get around to sorting it out!)

    also solvents such as
    white spirit
    metholated spirit
    lighter fluid

or scrub with astonish after soaking in hot water
    d'pends what you've got in

the cans will rust outside though - faster with holes - so a coat of clear varnish will hold that back for a while
