Separating fat from stock instantly

Just thought I'd share a quick tip that I discovered today. Probably a lot of you will know things like this already but it really helped me.

To separate fat from HM chicken stock, pour the stock into a cheap plastic food bag ( I did this with the bag lining a big jug so it didn't spill). You will see the fat floats on top as always. Now snip a tiny hole in the bottom corner of the bag and allow the stock to flow out. Stop the flow before the fat reaches the bottom.

I did this while the stock was still pretty hot (and the bag stayed intact even though it was a 2p value one) which was great as normally I chill it in the fridge and remove the solidified fat but this is much quicker in cases where you need to use the stock instantly.

What a very simple but clever idea. I usually faff about with ice cubes and a spoon. :rotfl:

You could always use a turkey baster to siphon the fat off and save yourself a cheap plastic bag.

I saw a jug using that principle where the spout was at the bottom of the jug. It could have been from Lakeland but I couldn't swear to it.

I have one of those but found it useless! I'l be trying the 'plastic bag' method, thanks OP.

Great idea OP! I've also tried the faffing about with icecubes method and those jugs only take about half a pint of liquid. I'll certainly give it a go!
(and the 'no washing of greasy utensils' is a definite hit with me!)

Fab idea! Thanks OP. Never would have occurred to me either, and I have also done my fair share of 'faffing'!

  • Fab idea OP will try that one. I also have done the ice cube and spoon trick as others have said lots of faffing. ;)
