Tried to clean taps - think stripped chrome off

I have chrome plated taps in the bathroom. The end of the cold tap was cover in limescale and I read if you soak paper towel in lemon juice and wrap around it should remove limescale. Well I did this and when I removed it (I used a cotton wool face pad) I could see silver bits on the pad and now the end of my tap looks rusty where the chrome has come off, also some of the limescale looks green. Does anyone know what's happened and what I can do to rectify it? Thanks
